...remove a numberplate before then trying to nick a bike?

Kind of a good job he did, as a bloke who lives on the street I park on heard the noise and came out and scared the potential thief. He said the bloke was messing around at the front of the bike, but he had unscrewed the numberplate (rather than just snapping it off).

(It never rains but it pours - no-one has touched the bike before that I know of. The clutch cable snaps, and someone has a go, all in the same night!)

Any reasoning?

so he could put the plate he'd probly brought with him on it so the polis wouldn't chase him. (is the only explanation i can think of)

Hi

Or a fair chance he was nicking the plate and tax disk to put on their own bike.

All the best

Or maybe he had a legit plate with him to put on it? Just long enough to get him and it home?

Both of the above, puts his own plate on, or pinches yours for his or another one he may have stolen. I hope you have upped your security as he will be back. Your bike is a known target now unless you up the anti.

Yup, more chains, chained to items, and superglued the screws for the plate onto it and the nut bits to make it harder to remove - also filled in the screw slots.

Why nick my crappy run down cb500 when there's a nice, chain-free bandit next to it ffs!

Because yours doesn't stand out, If he was going to use it for himself and any illegal activity he wont want to stand out to the police.

I'm not convinced that a bandit is any less generic than a CB500, myself.

I reckon Kickstart may have a point, though. Why fuck about changing a registration plate at half 1 in the morning on the road where the bike lives?

Plod may not be up to speed on bike makes, which might explain why. "Oh, computer says it's a black CB500s. That's a black bike, must be a CB500".

Just wish they'd nick mine instead! It's already been written off, I'd be quids in Very Happy
