HTC Touch Diamond - scratched screen.

I've just been given a HTC Touch Diamond. It's in fairly good condition and good working order, however the screen has a surface scuff to it, its not too bad using the phone except in direct sunlight it shows up the scuffs...

I'm going to use the phone for a bit and see if I actually like it or not.. but if I do like it, what are my options with fixing or at least improving the screen scuffs? is there any way of polishing them out?

Toothpaste works on watches. Since the HTC screen is described as "resistive" and can be used with a stylus or gloved finger, I think it shouldn't be a problem.
