Will I be able to bring my american iphone to the uk and get on a network or should I just sell it here ?

Any decent contracts on the iPhone in the UK ?

I'm not all that familair with the 3g ones, maybe newer basebands can not be downgraded to be unlocked. Find your baseband version and google it if it's 3g.

If it's a first gen one then you can unlock them easy and so put any sim in.

You'll need to jailbrake it to use it over here. Given how cheap iPhone 3Gs have gotten now, I'd say the hassle probably isn't worth it, sell it over there and either get a new O2 contract one here or take a detour to france and buy a true sim free one there Thumbs Up

Don't be confused between jailbreaking and unlocking, they are two completely different things.

Jailbreaking allows you to run unsigned code on the phone, which is stage one to load an unlocker. But you can not put any sim in a jailbroken phone.

All iPhone firmware versions (even 3.0) on all hardware generations can be jailbroken, but not all can be unlocked.

It's all to do with your baseband version and model generation as to weather you can unlock the phone or not.

As far as contracts go, i have been on Sim only deals and now pay as you go with my iphone, it really doesn't matter. The sim only deals do seems to be alot better than those which you get a free (subsidised by you) phone so i bet you'd save money by keeping your current phone rather than signing up for a 2 year contract with free iphone. Be silly to do that now with a new one out in June anyway.
