The oven in our student house has been broken for around 3 months now, and it's starting to fuck me off, I quite enjoy a bit of cooking, used to do roasts every few weeks, lasagnes, pasta bakes etc. but without the oven the only filling proper meal things I can think of are pasta, which is getting boring, microwave baked potatoes, and steak or pork chops, which are too expensive. Any ideas, I'm getting sick of beans, soup and noodles.

get an old shopping trolley and cut the wheels and bulk of the frame off it. Turn it upside down so you have a big mesh cage, start a big fire inside it. Wrap your food in plenty of tin-foil and it should cook similar to an oven.
You can also balance pans on it too...

We used shopping trolleys as a barbeque last year, if you push two of them together you can use the flippy up bit as a grill Thumbs Up

If it's a fan assisted electric oven they are easy to fix if it's just the element that has gone.

Curry and rice. Bangers and mash. Cous-cous and meat. Stew and dumplings.

You can boil, poach, shallow fry, deep fry, braise, saute and steam on the hob

Only things you can't do are grill, bake or roast. Although you can bake to an extent using the microwave.

You can also use a dutch oven which, as well as being a humerous term for the practice of holding the girlfriends head under the covers then farting, is a cast iron pot in which you can bake bread and suchlike on a fire or cooker top.

Slo-cooker would be perfect! They have a similar 1970's reputation as a hostess trolley Rolling Eyes , but are really excellent for anything casserole or stew related, having the added bonus of being totally idiot proof as you just bung stuff in and leave for hours, so no slaving involved, plus you can use them for desserts too! Beef, lamb or chicken casserole with mash and peas.........om nom nom!! Laughing

(clearly, you're not a lazy idiot as you can already cook, so not aimed at you, just a comment )

Get a BBQ, everything tastes amazing done on a BBQ, especially if cooked properly!!!

Also invest in a sandwich toastie machine, or a George Foreman grille, that should make food cooking more interesting.

Bangers and mash was todays lunch, read Stinkwheels suggestions just as I started eating it Thumbs Up

Gonna attempt a turkey stew affair tommorow, will look at new appliences when I have an income, but moneys tight ATM, considering kicking up a fuss about the fucked oven but I don't think I'll bother, we've had a few expensive things break this year, a shower and the garage door (backed into by a neighbour) none of them are our fault obviously, just seems a bit harsh on the landlord who we get on well with. He is sorting it, he's just being slow about it.

Though I am a bit annoyed with him, cos when we first signed the contract he told us that over summer he'd probably let us stay down here for less rent (£45pw compared to £65) and now that I've decided I want to stay in Plymouth with the GF over summer he's gone back on that and told me it's £65pw Confused

I never used an over whilst at uni. I'm far to lazy a cook

I survived off some stuff people have already said and in addition:

spag bol, pork and pesto, and my signature dish: fuel
a base of scrambled egg and beans. This can then be converted into any meal by adding any or all of the following:
cheese, bacon, sausages, Tabasco, Worcester sauce, fresh basil, basically anything you want.

This can also all be done in one pan Thumbs Up

Agree with Tonka, slow cookers are quite impressive and would have gone great for uni (although possibly been at odds with my party boy image Laughing).

As said, lob pretty much anything in them meat and veg based, some random condiments and spices (brown sauce and bullion powder works well Thumbs Up) and water/lager. Job done.

Also, just incase I haven't whore this recipe enough.

BIG frying pan. Fry up a pack of pork liver (sliced) with a couple of pork kidneys (wait til it cooks abit, then sliced). Fry them for about 10 minutes, then chuck in a tin or two of vegetable soup (the cheaper the better, I always use tesco value 17p) and a load of paprika and leave on a low heat for 5-10 minutes.

Serve with, well, anything (works with rice, couscous, pasta and small potatoes, jackets might be a bit weird).

I'm very proud of that ^ because I invented it when bored. It should be shit, but it's utterly gorgeous, healthy and reheats well (which will be handy as you normally make epic quantities accidentally). But more importantly, it's gorgeous without ever going near an oven.

slow cookers are the bollocks

best bit is, if you cook something slow and long, it makes it keep for ages in the fridge, so you can make one batch, that you can then reheat in the microwave whenever you are hungry, rather than having to make a meal each time

my favourite for this, is 2lbs of shin of beef, 2lb of oxtail, and 2lb of beef mince, with no added water, but maybe salt and dried herbs and dried chilli

oxtail and shin of beef are great for stewing, and the beef mince, stops them from drying out as they stew

you then get something which when cool looks a lot like corned beef, but is a lot more tasty, you then use it in whatever

maybe with rice, maybe with cous couse, maybe with pasta and passata

Rough idea of cost for the 6lbs? Sounds interesting.

i learned this trick of combining different cuts of meat to get a good effect, from heston blumnthal

he worked out the best recipe he could do for chille con carne

basically, oxtail has a really rich taste and nice texture, but as it comes with bones, its a little on the pricey side as you get less meat per unit weight

shin of beef, is ace stewing meat, with more flavour than normal stewing meat, but really does benefit from really long slow cooking

you wouldnt normally stew mince for a long time, but it works to keep the other two moist.

a rough cost is about £4 for 2lb of each of the types of meat, so thats about £12 for 6lb of meat that will last two weeks

it lasts you ages though, as you only need a bit of it with rice, so its probably more sensible to just get a lb of each and just spend £6 and have it last 1 week.

i've taken to adding large amounts of salt, so i no longer need to add salt when i make cous cous, as its salty enough from the beef

the salt also helps the beef keep aswell

you need to cook them for at least 6hours, until the point where if you stir it, the meat disintegrates

another cut that is really good, is fillet of pork, its about £3 a kg, which makes it about as expensive as sausages, but its cooks really quickly in a pan, like beef fillet, but beef fillet is pricey

fillet of pork cooks in a couple of minutes in a hot pan if cut thinly

I know it doesn't work cause you have no oven, but if you get a slow oven one meat I suggest...

Shoulder of Lamb. 4 hours at 150 degrees in a normal oven, no idea in a slow cooker, but my gosh the tenderness almost induces ejaculation upon the first mouthful, that coupled with mint sauce and onion mash potato is truly a taste sensation. Don't forget the honey-roasted parsnips either. But then again you don't have an oven.

In which case you should be trying damn sight harder to get it fixed!

a slow cooker is a big pot, a shoulder of lamb wouldnt work so well, as its a cut of meat that you roast

you could stew it, but you'd need to cook it in something else to stop it drying out, either cook it in chopped vegetables, or minced meat, but if stew it just in water, you would lose a lot to the water,

much better cut of lamb for stewing, is neck of lamb
