Which one really swings it for you?

My situation: -

Completed two second interviews for different jobs, could face the possible dilemma of having to choose between jobs.

First job, well known retail discounter. Deputy Store Manager. Pay 21k. Room for promotion within 2 years. 50 hours a week, 5 days of 7, but no written hours, so could work any day of the week. Physically demanding, doing every job possible. But as said good pay.

Second Job, well known car rental company. Trainee Graduate Manager. Pay 16.5k. Goes up to 18k after 12 months and then take commission on top. Become a branch manager within 2 years and expected realistic aim to take home at least 25k a year. Drive cars and interact with customers all day.

Now from the two work trials I have had in the past week the second job seemed so much more appealing, but at the same time the money on the first one could rise rapidly. Now obviously there is a high risk i'll be offered neither so must be taken lightly, but if offered both what would appeal more? The pay or the overall job satisfaction?

Just to make me look a complete nob, a poll is included.

If you don't have any time you can't spend the money.

Hmmm Id say pay.

I spend so much on shit that even with no job I cant seem to stop.
My new job (once CRB checks come through) is not great.
Its just kitchen work - washing up and serving people there dinner.
But the pay is good £8 to start going up to £10.50 after 6 months.
So Id say money Thumbs Up

Jon, ignoring pay and job satisfaction for a minute. From experience I would say you would float to the top easier (in terms of job prospects) in the retail environment. However you want to make sure they put you on the fast track grad scheme, not just a deputy store manager.

Car industry at the minute I think I would be avoiding if I had the choice. I also believe car sales is very 'cut throat', if you dont make your sales quota you will be out the door before you know it.

Does it not strike you as somewhat ironic that you're considering these retail management jobs but can't actually make your own decisions without the assembled wisdom of BCF?

Hi

Long term job satisfaction. Short term pay, but living for the money for too long becomes a nightmare.

In neither case though does the money sound great. The £21k would give you an extra £225 a month take home over the £16.5k. Also not sure either would give me any real job satisfaction.

All the best

Keith

First one sounds like Lidl, sounds very similar structure anyway to a job I considered. Potential of ~32K after a few years if it is IIRC. I worked in retail for 11 years and it can be tough hours wise. Shifts were normally anything between 7am and 8pm depending on role. Some nights too. Can be tough getting the days off and holidays you want.

Second job, meh. Driving lots of cars becomes very boring after a while. So is dealing with the public.

I'd go for the money - if you change your mind after a few years then you can always change.

Job satisfaction all the way. You'll spend more time working than not, so you may as well enjoy it.

Job satisfaction, always.

There has been maybe 2 days from 18 months with my current employer that I've not wanted to go in. Pretty sure I'm underpaid but not really caring at the moment, I value the enjoyment I get far more.

You're a graduate with 15k of debt and probably an impending marriage, unless you get the itch like a real man.

So which one gets you to £40k fastest?

The difference in take home won't be hugely different, £225 is easily eaten up in other costs. Consider the following:

Is there any shift allowance, overtime or expected bonus from either of them?
Which one has the longer commute?
Which one will you need to spend a fair amount on clothes to wear to work for?

Doing 50 hours a week for 21k and being called a deputy store manager sounds like a mug's game. However, if 25k is the ceiling in the short term in the other job then that's shit too. 25k gives you around £1600 take home each month. It's nice enough, but it's a stepping stone, not an aspiration.

You may well find yourself bored out of your skull in either job. At least in one of them you get to drive other people's cars.

Poor attitude, is it not feasible that you can be content with your pay and really enjoy your job at the same time? Laughing

Its not poor attitude ... its wisdom and experience.
Long gone are the days where I start a new job thinking "this is the one ... they sound great".
After 26 years of full time employment .... in 15 or so jobs ... doing everything from Tree Surgery, to Cabinet Making, to Office Management ... I now realise that no matter what job you are in, you will be treated like shite eventually by your employer , and/or shafted and let down by work colleagues (there is no such thing as a work 'mate').

There is only one exception to the above .. heed my advice young ones:

1) pick something where you can eventually work for yourself.
2) pick something that you are passionate about / you genuinely enjoy doing.
3) if you meet the previous 2 criteria, then forget pay and enjoy your lifes work.
4) if you do not meet the first 2 criteria .. take the MONEY!
5) spend said money on making you forget the misery that is doffing your cap to your employer and earning him a shed load of money while he takes the piss out of you.

Job satisfaction. I want a reason for getting up in the morning other than "it pays the bills".

Job satisfaction. I currently have reasonable pay, but the job is just getting on my tits, and there's really nothing worse. Finished at 10pm tonight and just went for a blast, at night, in the rain, with really shitty lights and no speedo light, just because I needed to blow off steam. Ended up going far faster than is strictly healthy in a built up area just because I needed a release.

Now looking for something I actually like, regardless of pay. Fuck it, lifes too short to spend it doing something you don't like.

And if you think you're not gonna like it before you even start...damn. I can't even imagine.
