At the Gates - Slaughter of the soul

If you've heard that -

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast (their only album worth listening to)

Meh. Nu-metal philistines.

Rainbow: Rising.

Print that on a t-shirt and dye your hair black.

Machine Head - The Blackening
Pantera - Reinventing Hell
Lamb of God - As the Palaces Burn
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death (But only if you like British Metal)

Oh and anything from Metallica, ignore the sheep saying that their new stuff isn't as good, try it for yourself, all Metallica is fantastic. Twisted Evil

He doesn't like european metal. Cos he's a homo.

Deep Purple: Machine Head

Any Iron maiden from Iron Maiden through to Seventh Son of a Seventh son plus Brave new world. Can take or leave the rest, especially the Blayze bailey crap.

Bruce Dickinson - Skunkworks, Accident at birth, Chemical Wedding

System Of A Down: Toxicity

Judas Priest: British Steel

Dio: Holy Diver

They are the ones that come off of the top of my head.

I've had Deep Purples Child in Time stuck in my head for three years now.

It's still fucking awesome.

So. Buy Deep Purple: In Rock

If you can't enjoy the sublime vocals on this, there is no hope for you. Nothing comes close when it comes to sustained wailing.

Yes it is. It's heavy metal in its original form

Extensive use of Hammond organ with fat chords, powerful vocals and extended solos is a hallmark of early heavy metal music.

Child in time is a largely improvised piece. Never the same twice.

Want it more guitar and drum heavy?

Mudvayne - LD50

Worth a listen, same aggresion as Slipknot, but a much nicer, clearer sound because they only have the musicians they NEED.

Machine Head - Burn My Eyes

Agree with that one - good debut.

Pantera - Vulgar Display or Far Beyond Driven

Pantera at their best I think.

Annihilator - Set The World On Fire

Cheesy thrash. Marvelous.

Anthrax - We've Come For You All

'cus John Bush is way better that Joey. Sorry, but it's true.

Long Time Dead

My friends band. They do what Metallica should have done instead of St. Inker

Megadeth - Peace Sells, Rust In Peace or So Far...
If you can get on with Mustaines vocal, they guitar work is awesome.

Nuclear Assault - Something Wicked

What thrash sounds like when its been nicely polished

Sacred Reich - The American Way

Slayer - South of Heaven or Seasons in the Abyss

Ssssslllllllaaaaayyyyeeeeerrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing else to say

Stone Sour - Come Whatever May

The best thing about Slipknot

Testament - Practice What You Preach

Wolfsbane - Live Fast, Die Fast

Raw British Metal.

Xentrix - Kin

I can't disagree with a lot of the suggestions so far (Stone Sour, Fear Factory, Pantera Thumbs Up ) but here's a few more:

Seether - Karma and Effect
Tool - 10,000 Days or Lateralus
Disturbed - any, though The Sickness and Ten Thousand Fists are my preference
Skyclad - A Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol, Wayward Sons of Mother Earth
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache (and a good cover of Holy Diver on the bonus tracks version of As Daylight Dies)
