PostPosted: 03:28 - 27 May 2009    Post subject: Sleep Problems Reply with quote

Recently I have been having trouble getting more than 4 hours sleep. For some reason my body will not let me sleep past 1pm (I work nights and finish at 7am) I wake up feeling rested usually between 12 and 1, obviously I don't feel rested for long.

The thing that confuses me is I don't get woken up, I wake up nice and gently as if I have had a full nights sleep. This has been happening for at least 2 months now, I can't remember the last time I had a solid 8 hours which I used to get regulary. This is making me grumpy and lathargic. I sleep with ear plugs in and sometimes wear an eye mask I have a sheets over my blinds so it is fairly dark in my room.

Any hints and tips to getting me some good sleep?

Just found this online,

Night shift workers often find themselves drowsy at work. They also have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep during the day, when their schedules require them to sleep. Being sleepy puts them at risk for injuries on the road and at work. Night shift workers are also more likely to have conditions such as heart disease, digestive disorders, and infertility, as well as emotional problems. All of these problems may be related, at least in part, to their chronic lack of sleep.

I'm think I really need to look at my life Confused

I have recently been having trouble sleeping. Something to do with getting married...anyway, I took Nytol and it worked a treat.

I was having problems getting to sleep, and if I got up in the night for a pee I couldn't get off again for ages.

Its not quite the same as your problem but it might be worth a try. It might just break the cycle of short sleep periods.

I guess it affects different people differently, but i'd say i very rarely get 8 hours sleep, im often on here 'till 3 or 4 am and then at work at 9am, it just doesnt seem to effect me much, i think its just something i got used to, although after 2 months i would have assumed you would be used to it if you were going to be.

My friend is like this, he is lucky to get 4 hours a night. I'm not used to it though I have always been a good sleeper.

TBH I don't want to start taking a 'product' to get me to sleep, I managed fine without it before. I don't really like the idea of taking medicine alot. I maybe take 2 paracieptamol (sp) once every 3 months. My body is a temple Laughing

Strangely I had 8 hours sleep today Mr. Green I assume it was BCFs collective good will towards me Laughing

Nytol is good. So are Kalms.

Piriton (hayfever/allergy treatment) works a treat for me though. One of those knocks me right out. A warm (not hot) bath and staying up a bit later may also help. Helps to regulate the circadian rhythm of the body clock.

I used to work nights. It's an absolute b'stard. Was like a bear with a sore head.

You could always resort to alcohol (within reason of course). Rolling Eyes

Alcohol means I wake up a few hours later with a dry mouth and a sore head. Laughing

maybe your body's telling you that you've had enough sleep, it's the same with my bf he works 2, 12 hour days and sleeps for roughly 8 hours a night

and 2, 13 hour nights but usually only sleeps for 4 hours but he says he feels more refreshed when he's only slept 4 hours during the day

Take a look at your diet - keep a food diary, work out what it is you're eating/drinking. Are you caffiene junkyish? Do you consume far, far too much sugar, do you drink coke etc before going to bed?

Also look at doing some regular exercise, even if it's just a walk round the block before you go to bed. Most people struggle to get to sleep if they've had nothing more than a vegetative session staring at the TV.

I've had very bad sleeping patterns over the last year and a half, I work a sort of night shift. Usually start at midday but can work anwyhere from 8 to 15hour shifts so trying to get into a pattern is impossible and just a waste of time.

Since I started it i've been staying up until about 4/5am after work no matter what time I finish and then sleeping pretty much until I have to get up and ready for work. This resulted in about 6hours sleep every night, it wasn't good, felt tired all the time and obviously was getting nothing done other than sleeping and working.

Finally the last week I've just been getting home, having something small to eat quickly then going to bed immediately and making sure I get 8hours. The problem is after 5 or 6 I wake up, not slowly just instantly and totally awake. Presumably it's because my body is so used to getting 6hours sleep that's all its able to use at moment, hopefully over time it'll adjust to getting 8 as currently the last 2hours are spent 'laying in' which is of no benefit.

At the weekend I sometimes have a drink (only 1 pint of cider or something) and it knocks me out as soon as I go to bed, I wouldnt and couldn't do it during the week but even if I did I doubt i'd get up in time the next morning, works too well. I'm the same as you, no drugs for anything unless i'm about to die. I'd give it some more time and you may still adjust to it.

Might also be worth not blacking out your curtains, I don't bother as I can sleep in daylight but maybe with it being pitch black all the time you're body isn't sure (subconsiously) what time it is so wakes you up just incase? What you're thinking affects how long you sleep as if I know I HAVE to be up at a certain time for something I will often wake up before my alarm ever goes up no matter what time I set it to even if i've only had 2-3hours sleep, wierd but happens.

I would have to disagree with you there, my doctor says that laying down, and resting, and doing absolutely nothing is of huge benefit to your body.

Just the act in itself, means that you are not doing 'anything' remotely physical (unless you are laying tersely on a bed of nails Laughing )...the mattress / sofa is cushioning you.

when i have my room completly blacked out and just the laptop on talking to people on msn (being the only light) i always fall asleep xD

you could always do something that takes all your energy out after work then you will feel like you NEED to sleep rather than doing it cos you work nights?

You know what I was going say chuck a your mum type joke in after your last post but I though no better not, keep it civil on BCF.

I'm actually sleeping well alright now. I have no idea why nothing has changed. although I have been using my air conditioner more it is easier to sleep when it is 16 degrees in your room.
