Evening everybody,

I was out on the bike over the weekend and when I was near home on the way back from a long ride I took my hands off the bars to stretch my back whilst doing about 45 ish and the bars wobbled like crazy from side to side. I put my hands back on the bars and all was ok. I pretty much shit myself as I wasn't expecting it!

I tried it again but at about 20 and all was ok, at 30mph it was still ok but a bit faster it wobbled. I though it was maybe the road surface but it was all on a smooth section of road. I was out on the bike for about 180 miles and didn't notice any problems and if anything I was faster and smoother around the bends.

I washed the bike and checked everything was tight and checked the wheels alignment and tyre pressures but everything was ok. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks

how many miles since your tyres where last balanced?

might be worth having them redone if you have any resonable wear on them.

next suggestion would be stop riding no handed at 45mph Rolling Eyes Wink

Got a top box on the back ??

Could be tyre wear.

Could also be that because you were leaning back, you simply took a lot of weight off the front and it was following the road tracks.

Front end wobble can be caused by the rear end. Check all the suspension linkages for wear, swingarm bearings, wheel bearings and spindle, and chain adjusters.


What bike is it? Does it have a headlight fairing?

Wheel balance, tire pressure, tire wear.

All wobbles like that I've had were down to one of those...

If your not sat EXACTLY centred on the bike it when you remove your hands that could cause it.......

I wouldnt like to spend all week looking for something to fix only to find that I sat on the bike lopsided.......

Mine used to but I had not got the wheel alignment 100% Just check that first as it's easy

That shouldn't cause a wobble! It might wander off centre, but no wobbling!

Utter shit.



I would check (In this order)

Tyre condition/pressure (I wouldn't have thought pressures would cause this though)
Check for wheel balance weight (Or signs it has fallen off)
Steering head bearings, get the front wheel off the ground and move the bars from lock to lock looking for notchiness, also check wheel bears by spinning the wheel and listening/feeling for nasty noises.
Rear end play, get the rear wheel off the ground and try to move the wheel/swingarm from side to side, might as well check the wheel bearing here too.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. I would have replied sooner the my PC screwed up and ive just fixed it.

Right, first off, 2 new tyres about 500 miles ago so no squaring off etc. Bike is a standard FZS600 without any luggage of any sort. There is no suspension or head bearing play etc. The wheel alignment is also ok.

Went out yesterday and didn't use no hands but just one hand lightly holding on for testing. Doesn't shake at 70+ or until about 45-50 mph. Shaking stops at about 30-35 mph. From my experience with cars this could be the balancing so I need to get the wheel off and get it balanced.

When riding normally with both hands holding the bars there are no problems but it has unnerved me a bit when going round bends just as I am getting my confidence up to go faster!!

I'll get the balancing done with a week or so and will let you know how it goes. Thanks again, Ben
