(CNN) -- A passerby pushed a would-be suicide jumper off a bridge in southern China because he was angry at the jumper's "selfish activity," Chinese media reported Saturday.
It happened Thursday in the city of Guangzhou as Chen Fuchao threatened to jump off Haizhu Bridge, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
The bridge has gained a "macabre" reputation with 11 jumpers having thrown themselves off the bridge since the start of April, Xinhua said.
Traffic was held up for nearly five hours and a crowd gathered as Chen sat on the bridge, threatening to jump, Xinhua reported.
Chen wanted to kill himself because he had 2 million yuan ($294,000) in debt after a failed construction project, Xinhua reported.
Lian Jiansheng, 66, who was passing by the bridge, offered to talk Chen down, Xinhua said. Police refused, but Lian broke through the police cordon and climbed to where Chen was sitting.
Lian greeted Chen with a handshake, then pushed him off the bridge, Xinhua said.
Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially-inflated emergency air cushion, damaging his spine and elbow in the fall, Xinhua said. He is now recovering in a hospital.
A photographer documented the sequence of events. The photographs show Lian, dressed in a T-shirt, shorts and socks, saluting to the crowd after pushing Chen off.
"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lian told Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."
Police took Lian away after the incident, Xinhua said. It did not say whether he would face any charges.

We need to get the potential jumper's side of the story, could give it an entirely different slant.
Also, what the man who pushed him off did was admirable but that lack of patience for his fellow man is a considerable chink in his armour...
I mean, just pushing the guy off, acting like a bull in a china shop...
Ummm...
Eh...
No, I'm done.

Well at least it proves Lian isn't a yellow belly...

Ok he didnt know the cushion thing wasnt fully inflated, but I think he should be charged with assault.
Having said that he does have a point, bearing in mind that several people have stopped traffic there before.
Im sure there is some movie where something similar happens. Not sure if its dirty harry or lethal weapon, but something like that.
No nonsense bloke calls the bluff of attention seeker.
However attention seekers have feelings too, and this case a spine and elbow that are now injured.
There was a girl at our school who liked to go on about what a tortured soul she was, and someone suggest she cut along her vein rather than across them, and sit in a bath of water so they wouldnt clot, which I thought was going a bit far.
Obviously she had no intention of actually killing herself, but it was sort of like challenging her to do it, the way a crowd in Derby told a jumper to jump, and he did. At least the chinese jumper had something to land on, whereas the Derby one died.
Lots of people feel low at times, and some people think they feel lower than anyone else and need to prove it, but I think they just need to change their life a bit. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Damn it! I knew there was more to be wrung out of it.
Still, it doesn't take away anything from my effort...
Oh dear...

Hardly a big fall either. I thought it was like a major drop ____________________ meh |

Watching the video it just looks like he gave the guy some confidence in him by the handshake so tricking him, the pushing off just seemed to be making sure he fell on the cushion thing instead of him potentially jumping off the other way for a hard landing... ____________________ Current Bike: '94 RVF 400R
