Bascially, a few months ago i could download using Utorrent, and Mininova/Pirate bay, i didn't use this for around a month or so, come back to use it and it doesn't work. I'm getting Utorrent is running but not responding etc etc. Tried the reinstall repair route, even tried BitTorrent.. No joy. Even limewire won't work, and i'm getting the same thing with Spotify, although i'm not entirely sure if it's related.

Any help would be good, i know bits about computers but my skills and understanding are a bit limited, willing to learn.

Thanks.

When you say unresponsive is that for all applications, they all hang before crashing?

Or is it that some do not connect to their central server so you are not able to download anything?

If it's the latter disable any firewalls and try again.

Basically what happens is, i download Utorrent, do all the normal shit.

Open Utorrent, and the little icon comes up in the bottom right corner, nothing happens for a while, so i double click it, wait a little longer and i get a notice saying something along the lines of Utorrent is already open and not responding.

Can't remember the exact wording as it's been a while since i tried.

Try running it in safe mode (keep pressing f8 at boot, select safemode with networking).

If this kind of problem happens with other applications then i'd go with a format.

But see what others have to say before you go down that road.

Doubt it would be that trojan as editing the host file would just cause an internal error in utorrent, not force it to fall over, or the other applications to fall over.

It's saying, it seems like uTorrent is already running, please close all uTorrent programs and try again. Of course this is when i try and open it.

Ctrl & Alt & Delete, open task manager, close Utorrent.exe from processes, and try opening it again?

I've done that, that's what brought up that message in the first place.

have you got/running a firewall? have you installed one recently? did you allow your torrent client access to the interwebz?

if you've got one, try turning off your firewall and restart your torrent client. if it works, you need to configure your firewall by adding an exception to allow torrent downloads.... dont leave your firewall off.
