Hi all: as you may know, I've been working on altering and generally attempting to improve my 125.
However, since I was recently informally told off by a copper for my exhaust being waaaay too loud, I'm likely to have to put my old exhaust back on.
My significant problem with this is that it's the exact opposite of a straight-through: it's impeded to an insane level.
This is how it looks, from the inlet of the exhaust can itself -

As you can see, there's this weird corrugated metal crap all the way through it. While this not only makes the bike a lot quieter (which can have its uses, I suppose), I'm worried about it altering the fuel/air ratio.
It used to run rich as hell, which isn't going to kill the bike itself, but does clog plugs up pretty capably. This has been further complicated by the fact that I've now got a K&N style air filter on there: I can't put the airbox back on, because the battery now occupies the space it used to have.

So: is re-attaching the old exhaust going to cause me any problems? I'm not afraid of re-jetting, I'd just rather not have to do it, if I can get away with it.

Also, would it be workable, just as a theoretical thing, you understand, to cut out some of the corrugated stuff, so I've got an exhaust that still has more baffling than what's currently on there, and isn't damn near silent.

Having said that, the idea of a stealth bike appeals...

Hi

Not sure that is going to provide any restriction at all. The overall area of the pipe is probably about the same despite the stuff in it.

Jetting is funny stuff. Pretty much anything will change the needs a bit. Issue is whether it is too far out to be coped with. Too lean means more chance of detonation, running hot and possibly seizing. Running rich means down on power, possibly fouled plugs and long term more wear from the excess fuel washing oil from the bores.

All the best

Keith

Fair play. I'm guessing that most of it was psychological, then.
I'm going to put the old silent one back on there, then. At least, until the number of coppers about calms down a bit...

Cheers Keith Very Happy

that corrigated stuff is the catalytic convertor, if you can get it all out it wont harm the bike and will improve the running/power somewhat along with reducing cylinder head temperature.
