So the recent interest in the shuttle has probably sparked this in me, but still...

I remember watching one at box hill a few years ago, seemed like pretty good fun.

Doesn't look to be to expensive/complex either compared to remote control helicopters/planes.

Anyone play with rockets?

Buy a decent base kit, then you can buy all sorts of different power motors and stuff!!
Me and Hetzer lauched a mouse one time.

Its easy to fly, easy to learn, can be flown indoors and parts are readily available.

Its better than your average heli simply because it is really stable and easy to fly.

With a rocket, you just spend hours setting it up, press the go button and thats it. Seems pretty dull to me.

Used to with my Dad and Brother.

We lost quite a few in peoples gardens on descent (we launched from the middle of a park on a concrete cricket pitch).

All our stuff was Estes https://www.estesrockets.com/

As said, get a decent base set (launch platform and lunch button etc) and then most of the rockets should launch from it.

I must say, building the rockets from scratch was totally gay when you are 10 years old waiting for arraldite to set and wanted to launch it NOW.

Had a few Estes model rocket kits a few years ago and they are fun for a day or so. 0-100mph in about 0.2 of a second...serious fast and easy to build. they do altitude sensors to see who gets the highest etc and a fairly cheap if crude 110 camera kit that takes a pic when the chute deploys....can get some fun results if it points in the right direction!

indoor helicopters are alright and can be fun for a few hours but not that much in exciting once you have flown around the house at 2 mph.

Value for money vs flight time and fun..go for a RC nitro plane..if you have a club you can fly from and learn. chances are you can get in the air with a second hand .46 motor and 50" wingspan for less than £100 with radio that will last you for a couple of years so long as you don't prang it!!

Played with a small model rocket that cost a few quid about 3years ago, bought the halfway mark engines for it and was quite impressed with the height it reached, was fun, but shortlived. As Marjay says, once you've watched it whoosh up into the air a few times the novelty will wear off, it's not like you're trying to achieve anything really.

Going OT somewhat, but i remember a time when i was just a young lad and my dad took me to a place where they were flying model planes.

Some bloke turned up with an absolutely perfect model P-51 Mustang which he had just finished building, all the blokes there ooh-ed and ahhh-ed over it for a while, including me and me dad.

It took off, went up really high, then the engine cut out and it did a perfect kamikaze dive into the windscreen of one of the cars in the car park!!

Poor bloke, he was actually sobbing as he looked at the wreckage of his plane and the smashed windscreen of someone else's car!

Still makes me chuckle to this day, despite it happening about 20 - 25 years ago.
