Just as a random thought me and my dad had a discussion in the car over the following situation.

"You are riding a fully legal bike, with all relevant documentation, tax, insurance, full license and pulled over for a random tug as part of a police crackdown on illegal bikers. When interviewed by the police you give your correct name, but state that you have stolen the bike, have no insurance, MOT or Tax, and not even a CBT."

Now when the rozzers find out you have sent them on a wild goose chase with your details, would they charge you with obstruction, or wasting police time?

Just a random hypothetical question

perverting the course of justice.

Also, they'll have already siezed your bike for no insurance by this point, costing you £120 plus £12/day storage.

£80 PND for Wasting Police Time

And as many FPN's they can find on your bike as possible. More than 3 and you get a court date.

Not perverted the course of justice. There would have to be an offence that was lied about/covered up etc etc

Bike wouldnt be seized for no insurance without a PNC check

hyper- is the opposite of hypo- so since hypothetical questions don't require an answer, a hyperthetical question DEMANDS AN ANSWER, NOW!
The OP was relaying a hypothetical situation, which is very different to hypothetical question.

My hypothetical response was extremely witty, unbelievably insightful and beyond many who read this threads understanding.

Unfortunately my real response is I don't know.

By the time they have pulled you they know who the bike belongs to, whether it's insured and whether it's taxed and MOT'd.

and all at the press of a button....

Make no mistake, big brother is watching you. Shocked

Fair point. But if you said you'd stolen the bike, they'd nick you for theft on the spot, and almost certainly recover the bike. So it'd still cost you. If the £80 wasting police time is right, that's £200 before you've even started.

That would be a rhetorical question.

I know I'm going to lose cool points here. But think 'What would Homer J say?'.

And I'm guessing the OP was thinking the same direction as I was about wasting each other's time. Hence the question Mister James...?

how right you are.... i wonder how much time i can waste without actually committing an offence.... perhaps exercising my right to silence for a good 5 hours or so despite no need to... Thumbs Up

and i have no criminal record and are completely unknown to police so i cant be traced with the PNC....

The other way is to deliberately omit certain details without telling a lie...

This isn't quite right but good enough:

Marge: What are we going to do?
Homer: I don't know
Marge: It was a rhetorical question
Homer: Rhetorical eh? 7!

Moonie - you suck! See PROPER answer below... Rolling Eyes

Mother Simpson: [singing] How many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man?
Homer: Seven.
Lisa: No, dad, it's a rhetorical question.
Homer: OK, eight.
Lisa: Dad, do you even know what "rhetorical" means?
Homer: Do I know what "rhetorical" means?
