Cylinder head stuck to block *UPDATE* Still stuck

Following on from my previous thread about breaking a spark plug off in the head I stripped everything down today inorder to take the head off as all other attempts at removing the plug had failed.

Anyway, everything is stripped down, all nuts are removed but the head is completely stuck to the rest of the engine. I have managed to get it to budge a crack on one side but it's still refuses to budge.

Does anyone have any bright ideas on where to go from here as I was hoping to get it all finished tomorrow.

I've spent longer farting about trying to get the head off than I actually did in removing everything else to get the the head. Sometimes I really hate buggering about with this stuff.

just keep wiggling it may have a couple of guide dowels which are tight or be glued on by the gasket just rock it back and forth till it starts to move.

just dont be tempted to jam a screwdriver in there .

Plugs back in and slowly turn over... Not with the electric start by the way...

Can also use a rubber mallet, as used for panel beating.

Just aim for the bits were the fins have some strengthen bits between them.

I've been going at it with a rubber mallet and have managed to break a couple of fins off already but will hopefully be able to glue them back on with something.

I had to give up with it today as it was just driving me mad, at least I now have the use of my inlaws warm and dry double garage to work on it now as opposed to my usual garden path

Guess i'll be having a go at more wiggling (and swearing, loudly) tomorrow.

Always worth checking 10 times there is not an additional bolt besides the head bolts, sometimes on the outside of the head going upwards, just to be extra sneaky. If you don't have a manual showing every fastener, be very suspicious.

If you are sure, then there is absolutely no good to come from hitting it as you have discovered. Very occasionally engines do actually have a little slot for a lever, but if it hasn't got one, don't improvise.

Given that there's no bolts, it will be stuck on it's dowels, and the only solution is to pull it STRAIGHT upwards. If it's still in the frame, then rigging up something using rope, random bits of wood and a jack can do the trick.

You have removed the four small M6 nuts from the front middle and rear middle of the head on the outside? Can be hard to spot as they are upside-down.

Yes i've removed the four M6 bolts.

Going to go and have another go with it in a bit so hopefully i'll have more luck today.

Tried turning the engine over by hand and with the electric start and it does seem to be making some progress although the head is still stuck. I can now wiggle it forward and backward if I put a bit of old broom handle in the inlets and move it about. I still can't however get the head off as I can't get hold of it properly to be able to pull it straight up.

I've been at it for quite a few hours today and am now at the point of wanting to give up and junk the bloody thing. I did have this week off work but it looks like it'll be spent faffing about with this

Apart from removing the entire engine to gain better access has anyone got any more bright ideas?

The other thing you can do is feed it a whole lot of rope through the spark plug hole, then turn the flywheel with a big socket/bar. Done it on an ancient alfa romeo, never tried it on a bike, but it should work!

(leave a dangly bit of rope sticking out, just in case you have to make like you never tried )

I have used a compressor in the plug hole to "crack" the seal of the gasket before, but the best thing is usually to pull straight upwards. Granted it takes some force but it saves knocking chunks out if it or bending something. The Rope idea further sounds a reasonable solution.

I think we are at the jam a screwdriver in stage, this can and probably will damage the mating surfaces - don't go stupid as you should be able to gasket out a small amount of damage - but if you are absolutely sure you have all fasteners out, and other 'persuasion' techniques have failed, its screwdriver and big hammer time!!
