I need some life insurance and after looking it up on 'confused.com' am left quite confused. Laughing

Who has it and who with?

Any details you can provide regarding this subject?

I don't need illness cover included, just literally something for the dead bit.

Lets start with a question...

Why do you need it.

Do you not get any with your pension.

Have a look on Quidco, you can get upto £50 on life ins.

I have it, as I have a few debts that I wouldn't want to leave my wife lumbered with. Also, if we have kids any time soon, I'd want to ensure that she doesn't have any bills that she can't cope with. I think it's only a small amount, like £50k on my head, but it should be enough to cover it. I pay about £10 a month for my cover.

I have 4x salary through work, that is standard for everyone.

I also have a optional £100k through work that costs £8 per month.

I also have a £100k along with a £25k per year payable to spouse until 65 years old. They are with Swiss Re I believe. That covers the mortgage and enough for sweets each month.

And I wonder why my wife grins when I go out on the bike Thinking

Hi

There are different types of life cover.

Term- assurance is usually cheapest and pays only if you die, it can be for a fixed or decreasing amount (if its for a mortgage)

Or you can have a sort that pays out when you die or after X years.
(often used with endowment mortgages)

Or fancier policies that will pay out if you are critically injured, or certain serious illnessess that pay out a lump sum or income.

Before rushing to buy a straight life insurance evaluate what you need and want. (how much, how long, what for)

While the obvious if for wife kids to be ok if you die, its often more of a strain if you have a long term health problem so income protection may be more appropriate. Some companies offer combined policies HSBC do something called lifechoices but im sure other do to.

You may need to speak to a financial adviser or two to get a full picture.
Regards
C

I have a policy with Zurich that pays the mortgage off for the other person if I die (suicided exempted). Costs me £8 per month.

If I didn't have a mortgage I wouldn't bother.

Decided not to bother with sickness or long term illness cover, as it was much more expensive. I try to keep a healthy amount in savings to cover these eventualities should they ever arise, and lets hope they don't.

If you end up applying, be wary of applying using a "tick box" application form, as alot of these covers have loopholes and they will find a way of not paying out should something happen.

Go for the Teleunderwrighting providers, who actually get an advisor to speak to you and you answer questions to them in more detail.

Mine is with Axa, life and CIC for £100k, £19 P/M, although I do get a staff discount..
