I'd really recommend stumping up the extra moolah and getting a place in Manhattan.

Little Miss and I stayed right next to Times Square; expensive, but worth every penny. We stayed out till 3-4am every day just soaking up the buzz and people watching. It wouldn't have been the same if we'd had to travel in from the 'burbs.

See thats the problem, So far - all ive found is flights + Hotel for £600-800. Which to me seems mental!

Looking at the end of august to 6/7th Sept.

Aye, we paid a fair bit, probably about 800 each for 8 days. It was well worth it though, our hotel was quiet, but about 10 paces from the centre of Times Square.

I guess it's a case of getting what you pay for! The cheaper hotels are all miles away from the centre, in some cases they are back by the airport. I was willing to pay the extra for the location, and to save on hours of travelling to and from Manhattan.

One recommendation from a mate who goes regular (well sort of, wedding anniversary and the like)...

Avoid hotels and get an apartment instead. They're the same money, often cheaper. Offer more flexibility. Plus as said, make sure it's Manhatten.

Thumbs Up

Came back on Sunday from 8 nights in New York Smile

Stayed in a hotel behind Grand Central. Flights and Hotel for 2 of us cost £1000.

Apartment idea sounds good, I'd certainly recommend staying on Manhattan rather than the 'burbs. Being able to walk everywhere is a real bonus.

Hold on, I'll have to check my journal, but I stayed in a hostel in Manhatten, it was really handy for Times Square etc. It was an excellent price. I'll have a look for you...

Here we go, this is where I stayed...in the mixed dorm...https://starhotelny.com/rooms_dormitory.php
at the Chelsea Star Hotel. There was outdoor space, the bathrooms were good. Reception open 24hrs. Prices excellent. There are no cooking facilities, or anywhere to prepare food, but it was a good price considering how close it is to everything - in walking distance.
