I welcome a police state in the UK, but not a corrupt government.

We need a police state or close to it, lets face it democracy is failing. We should welcome ID cards as there are so many people that just cant be trusted to show common respect to there fellow man.

Capital punishment should be given out to repeat offenders on there second/third offence no matter what the crime is.

Ppl just cant take responsibility for there own actions, drunken retards roaming around hellbent on starting trouble. Drug addicts with nothing to do but feed there habit. Kids with nothing to do but join gangs, and carry knifes or guns.

Illegal immigrants (nuff said).

We need strong leaders in charge of this once great and respectable country, assertive action for the good of us poor brits that are slowly drowning.

Where do you think we will be in 10/20 years time...............?

In much the same position, the more things change , the more they say the same

Just read some history, people like Enoch Powell were ranting about immigrants years ago, before him wasn't it Oswald Mosley (FIA boss Max's dad), before him, well you get the picture.

Now if only we'd actually learn from history rather than repeat it we might get somewhere.

I couldn't disagree more.

Do you think its possible to have some sort of benign dictatorship? How long do you think that will last until corruption sets in.

Any form of government authority will consist of people. People are flawed, ergo the system will begin to reflect those flaws. Trading an imperfect democracy for an imperfect dictatorship? Neutral

I suspect it'll be fine till they came for you.

I'll pass thanks.

Thumbs Up

Personally, yes it is possible (although unlikely). But it is dependent on the individual dictator, so even if you are lucky enough to get it right and land up with a decent one the chances of their successor being up to the same standard are very limited.

All the best

I can think of a few countries with benign dictators which do very well for themselves & their citizens.

However in a perfect world I would just like politicians who were honest, competant & accountable.

In fact the same applies to those running banks Rolling Eyes

It can't work. No dictator has absolute power, some of it has to be delegated down the line. Ok, the dictator might be benign but what about the apparachiks down the line? Hundreds of people enforcing the law, are they all going to be as benign as the man at the top?

I would advocate a system that rules out anyone for positions of power who actively seek it. Basically, if you say you want to be an MP you can get stuffed. Some sort of lottery similar to jury service, but a list consisting of people who have proven themselves to be capable and able. There would be a rolling committee to manage the list to try and root out any vested interests. If someone is a numpty, they don't get on.

People could be drawn randomly from the list to sit for 3 or 4 years in a parliament. It would be non-political, no left or right, justa government of consensus drawn from all walks of life.

Enshrined in the law would be the edict that once you've sat for 3 or 4 years, you're out until you're picked again, no hanging about (so no vested interest in remaining.)

The problem we currently have is that MP's are to busy perpetuating their own existance as oppossed to doing what they're supposed to do; govern the country fairly.

Thumbs Up

When you have absolute power in a police state, what do you think that leads to?

You haven't got democracy at the moment mate. You live a corrupt oligarchic, corporate feudal state, covered with the veneer of a 2 and a half party parliamentary charade. The only say you've got is an "X" in a box every 5 years to say what colour you want the veneer.

What's the Churchill quote? "Democracy is the worst form of government, but it's better than all the rest we've tried".

Democracy may be the tyranny of the majority, but it'd be a nice change.

Democracy, the right of the minority to rule the majority......

Or in the UK's case the right of the unelected Mandarins of Whitehall to rule the country.....
The MP's are mealy puppets to their whims.

Do you really think that Yes Minister was a comedy and not a early attempt at reality tv.... Laughing

Strong leaders, will change nothing as they cannot beat the PC mob and the civil/human rights mobs......

Who care nothing for what the majority consensus is, only to make sure that nothing ever changes, unless it benefits them....

Democracy isnt perfect, but its the best system for a country like ours.

If anything, I'd like our democracy to be a bit less like a dictatorship.

For example, I believe that we went to war with Iraq without a free vote on whether to go to war or not.

Its true that leaders can manipulate those who are supposed to oversee them. Parliament is no longer the check on government that it is supposed to be.

However government is now so complicated and done more by committee that it would be very difficult to have an effective check on government.

A charismatic leader such as leader coming to power and taking control and making bad decisions is inevitable from time to time.

Those who come to power are skillful at attaining power, they arent necessarily equipped with the skill or self-control to use it wisely.

I believe a former US president said this.

"Those who would trade freedom for safety deserve neither freedom or safety".

Of course its an imperfect system. But this country allowed almost unparalleled freedom in many things. We have the right to vote, the right to same sex marriage. the right to peaceful protest which in many of the world would be put down by police.

I have been to many and few countries have it as good as us. And the only country where an absolute leader seems to work is Oman. Mainly because the Sultan has devolved many of his powers to a government. (Though he retains ultimate veto). But even there many of their ways seem quite backwards compared to us. (Though its improving rapidly).

He didn't. Nor did this hypothetical president say:

Quote:
They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.
He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security.
He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.
People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.
If we restrict liberty to attain security we will lose them both.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.
Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither.
Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security.

Benjamin Franklin said: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

He also said stuff like:

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power." and "I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it."

Perspicacious old cove, that Ben Franklin...
