Right where to start.

Basically me and 2 friends are wanting to do something different and go somewhere further afield on our bikes.
[They are pictured below]
All 50cc and the slowest is very comfortable sitting at 40mph without it anywhere near blowing up.
The idea is to get the ferry from plymouth (we are all based in Torbay, Devon)
Go over to france, find some good twisty roads not 70mph dualies because of the bikes and because that would be boring.. Smile

We intend to either stay in youth hostels or camp it out.
Hopefully camping.
We would be wanting to ride each day but not spend the whole day riding. Some good places to visit on route hopefully.
The whole thing is looking to be about 7days long departing from plymouth by ferry rather than drive the 250+miles on 50cc's to the eurotunnel in Folkestone.
Looking to do this beginning of June once the exams are over so looking into details before hand so no nasty suprises.

Basically I would be really grateful if there are any of you out there who have done anything similar or if you could suggest some good roots, not too far off the beaten track because of refueling the 7ltr capacity fuel tanks lol

We would be packing very lightly probably having light tail packs bungee corded down and a combination of small strapped down tank bags.
This would be for lighter bulky stuff.
Have a compact tent which we could split between the three of us.

If you have any hints tips suggestions things to avoid on this sort of trip I would gladly listen to whatever you have to say.

Is it possible to travel to france on a CBT of would it be a case of having a full moped license?

What sort of budget do you think is realistic for each of us.
Camping, cooking our own food, ferry tickets etc.

This is basically just throwing it open to ideas and suggestions to you all.
Some of you may say don't even bother, too much hassle on a 50cc etc etc but that is what we have and we are wanting to get and there and make the most of what we have and can do.

Cheers!
Chloe x

Hi

Not sure on the licence thing, but it would not surprise me if you needed a full licence. There are also odd issues with the min age for a larger bike in France, not that this will cause you problems (ie, think you need to be 18 for anything over 125cc, even on a UK licence).

You will also likely have problems getting any AA / RAC cover for small engined bikes while abroad.

That said, people do get away with things. Once when I lived in Portsmouth there was a group of French kids outside the local Honda dealer on little moped (which had no numberplates so pretty certainly not legal in the UK).

All the best

Keith

Hi Chloe,

I believe you have to be 18 or over with a full bike licence to ride abroad.
also just a few tips..
remember to carry a hi-viz jacket, spare bulbs and a first aid kit as these are requirements in other e.u countrys. Thumbs Up
make sure your insurance will cover you in europe.

and most of all have fun Very Happy

The 2 stroke bike is a bit of a worry...

But you mean the Plymouth , Roscoff ferry? erm the North & north West corner of France aren't exactly thrilling and good roads are all in the south.

But it depends how spartan you want to be, ie you can stay at some camp sites for 5 Euro per person , +2~5 Euro for bike parking as said in another thread you can always park your bikes outside to save money.

An old man I met on the way home from Spain last year managed to spend about £300 for several weeks he cooked everything himself and rode everywhere very slowly.

But remember the currency is trashed and the petrol costs 30% more than it does in the UK. A week in Wales or the lakes would probably be more apt as it only gets cheap once you hit Spain or the Balkans.

Go for it. stay off the A roads and the Paeges ensure you have all your documents available and your license which allows you to ride a 50cc bike and you will be okay

You do not need a hi-viz jacket in France.

some tips for traveling can be seen here

They're on CBTs, at least the person who posted this thread is, a CBT is not a licence nor is a provisional so they cannot ride outside of the UK, they need to get a full licence of some description. Plus some dual carriageways prohibit 50cc bikes.

you can ride using your CBT anywhere in the EU! I asked a traffic cop this the other day!

He explained that we have a EU license and the CBT allows us to ride a 125 anywhere in the EU.

i would still research this a lot more before doing it!

Sorry but that just shows a lot of traffic police don't know what they're talking about. You need a full driving licence to drive abroad and a provisional is NOT a full licence, the EU thing is irrelavent. The problem is not that the DVLA won't let you drive abroad because it's not their jurisdiction, the problem is you're breaking the laws of the country your visiting by driving without a valid full licence.

Rolling Eyes That's a french learner licence, of course if you have a french learner licence you can ride in france, an english learner cannot ride in france.

You't cant legally ride in other countries on a CBT, a CBT is a non-licence, it's just a practice permit. Why on earth would anyone need to practice in France for their British licence? Wink

it is (or at least was) legal to ride anything up to 50cc in france with no licence, no insurance, not even registration or number plates (probably hence the french kids out side the honda dealership) but the EU may have made it all gay now, look it up

The only motorvehicle I've taken to France has 4 wheels 'so far' and if your crossing over at Roscoff you'll soon notice there are few petrol stations (as someone else has mentioned) so check the range of your tanks and plan out your route. Microsoft autoroute or googlemaps probably shows you where petrol stations are?
If your on 50cc's perhaps head from Roscoff to Paimpol > Saint-Malo > Cherbourg >Ferry to Bournemouth/Portsmouth?

I've cycled through parts of Brittany/Normandy and its really easy to camp Wink you just find a field and stick you tent up... no seriously no one has ever complained. Then again camping's cheap compared to England.

If for legal reasons or costs you chose not to go then perhaps head down to the far end of Cornwall? I know that might sound boring but I'm from Saltash and I had some awesome times once I passed my car license explored and camping with friends. Check out the Lizard Peninsula, there's a random hostel in Coverack. Then anywhere along the North coast is usually real buzzing, maybe Newquay if you want hectic drunken grockles. Good times to be had with fires on beaches and randomers.

just an idea^
