Hi there

I need to have my clutch basket out. The haynes says to not re-use the clutch nut.

How important is this?

Severely struggling to get hold of a new one within a reasonable time frame (looking at 4 weeks back order!)...

I re-used mine for the exact same reason.

I think the problem is because if correctly tightened, the bit you pike into the clutch basket lands up in the same place.

I marginally overtightened mine to avoid this.

I am working on the principal that it tightened down far enough without stripping and is piked in so it can't undo.

Ah sorry, nomenclature... what is meant by 'pike' here?

Its the little metal surround on the nut that you indent with a screwdriver / chisel to help secure the nut.

Some engines dont have it.

Interesting.

I'm looking at an old nut (not had the one from my engine out yet), and it has the hex part, and a smaller od round collar, which appears to have thread distortion at the end of it, to a slight rounded triangle.

There is no obvious sign of having been screwdrivered or chiselled, unless this is what you mean!

I'm not sure of how it assembles just yet as, as I've said, not had the one from my engine out yet, this one came with the replacement clutch (all for the want of the internal hub, gah.), so I'm not sure how it'd assemble just yet, though I think it sandwiches a thick washer...

Looking into this further, wikipedia suggests it is an toplock nut. The implication seems to be it can be re-used?

Haynes vs. Wikipedia, the final showdown..

I've never replaced a clutch nut. I don't know of anyone who has. I think they are just covering their backsides my advice is just re-fit the nut and re-use the locking device.

Its the same as people who say you should replace the rear wheel axle nut every time you change the tyre.
