Yes you could do it, if you can hack the mileage and get an early morning ferry from dover to calais you could make it there in one day, mega mileage though so you'd be wrecked when you get there, Crawley to Dover is a doddle. Ideally though it's a 1.5 - 2 day trip down there, only really leaving you with 1 day at your friends, so not exactly ideal.

The other ferries such as Portsmouth to Le Havre take too long and are expensive, quicker to ride it. Newhaven to Dieppe might possibly save you time not sure on that, again it's expensive in comparison though.

Agreed, it's do-able, but not pleasant - i did Perpingan to Calais, Eurotunnel and then up to Herts in one session on my K5 750 - left at 12pm arrived home at 2.30am - around 1400km/900 miles. I was cruising on the Autotroutes at around a steady 120mph, stopping every 110 miles or so for fuel, piss, stretch, caffeine and nicotine.
I was physically exhausted, but due to my caffeine intake i couldn't sleep - was wiped out the next day though, and wouldn't do it again.
If i were you, i'd have an overnight stop somewhere like Dijon or Lyon - that way when you do meet up with your mate, you'll actually be able to enjoy your time there, instead of being a zombie.
