The main difference being a 1.9CDTI to replace her 1.8i Petrol.
Are we going to see much difference in fuel economy? for better or worse?
Our first diesel car so don't quite know what to expect.
Kind regards. |
My mate has one, drives like a pussy and gets approx 50mpg. Thing is with the Vectra 1.9 CDTi, they have a few large issues. At the moment I'm selling 2 or 3 DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filter) a week at £600 a pop. Then they have dual mass flywheel problems, which cost £500 for parts alone to rectify (they only last a few years). Intercoolers and EGR valves are another common problem. Gearboxes, cats, diesel pumps, turbos, all common problems.
I'm afraid to say that whatever you were planning on saving on fuel will be spent on repairs as the 1.8 petrols aren't a bad car. Sorry to be a scaremonger, but that's my day to day experiences with them. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Errr, if true then... ouch? |
Ouch indeed. I have a friend that buys and sells cars from auctions and he had to replace a DMF and clutch kit on one that had 50 odd thousands miles just last week. Pretty much all profit was lost on the job even though he carried out the labour himself.
Thing that people don't realise these days is that diesel technology has come a very long way in the last 15 years, and much of the technology hasn't been tried and tested, therefore ironing out problems is much needed.
The DPFs for example have only appeared in the last 4-5 years, only due to Euro emmisions laws. They just get clogged up with soot, some can be cleaned out, but most need replacing. Expect a bill for around £1k upwards from a main agent. Crazy, just crazy (I'm looking at one now for a Vectra CDTi, all it is like a cat converter). My collegue is on the phone to someone that needs one right now . ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

On the fuel economy side of things it really depends on how many miles a year you do. About a year ago we swapped our 1.6 petrol Focus for a 1.8 Diesel Focus estate based on our yearly mileage being the same. Baby beanfeast came along and my wife will only be returning to work in the next couple of months, so our past years mileage has been minimal compared to normal. However on a rough estimate, the petrol version would do about 350miles to a tank whereas the current diesel does 400miles - (I'm asuming the tanks are both the same size by the way!).
Also to note, I looked into all this TDCI and TDDI stuff and ended up buying the newest TDDi I could get my hands on. The dual mass flywheel malarky really does cost a bomb to get replaced, along with other issues I've heard about and have been mentioned above in other replies. Okay the TDDi is more noisy but I think the engine will last forever looked after, and it pulls like a horse! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.
(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).
Current: Yamaha TDM 900 (Comfy, light but big, power when needed). Also now a Tiger 1050, easily best of the lot! |

As far as I can see it's only 150hp ones that are fitted with DPFs, so you should be OK on that front. Flywheels and clutches are still dear.
You should be fine TBH, we sell a lot of stuff for them simply because there's that many on the road. I'd just say that if you notice anything odd happening with the car sort it out sooner rather than later to save any further damage (I'm thinking EGR valve, intercooler, turbo blowing up in that order.)
They're a nice enough motor, and my mate reckons he gets 750 miles to a tank of fuel, which can't be bad whichever way you look at it. All cars have common issues, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, just keep on top of servicing. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Wouldn't of thought so. Even if you could manufacture a pipe to put in it's place, there's a warning light which shows up on the dash, which would probably be a fail.
Also, I'd of thought that the diesel emissions tests will be getting (if not already) pretty strict, due to the Euro 4/5 laws, which is why DPFs are becoming more commonplace.

EDIT: Actually, the car goes into limp home mode when the DPF is faulty/clogged (so a customer told me the other day) so I'd of thought that it would be a total no-no. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
