When I got my CBR last year from the local bike shop, just a small one man band shop, I saw a bike stuffed in the corner with a big please do not touch sign on it which none of the others had. I went over and almost died when I saw the price tag of £100k Shocked . As I left the shop my dad (doesn't know nothing about bikes) asked the guy why it cost so much and if anyone actually pays that much, he said 'it's a Honda test bike and he had a few people come and see it'. A year on it's still there.

My question is that what's so special about it? Didn't look that amazing to me Confused

Found it quite funny because this shop is about the size of a newsagent and is crammed with all sorts of bikes, 1098's, ZX10's, etc, there's no space to walk, there's even bikes on the wall Laughing And then in the corner is 100k bike Laughing

Hi

As above. It was a V4 with oval pistons (shaped like spam cans), 2 con rods per piston and 8 valves per "cylinder". Honda started out developing the idea around 1980 as they were trying to get a 4 stroke to produce enough power to compete with the 2 strokes, but failed (people accused NR of standing for Never Ready).

Eventually around 1990 Honda brought out the NR750 road bike priced at a silly amount just to show what could be done and then forgot about them.

Can't remember how many they made but it was deliberatly just short of the number required for homologation for WSB. As such might have been 249.

For an idea of what the price was like, in 1992 they were listed at £38k, while a VFR750 was £6363.

If that bike is the one I think it is then it is seriously over priced. It sold on Ebay from Honda (it was Hondas test bike) about a year ago for about £45k, and instantly appeared on sale for £100k.

All the best

Keith

As G mentions, the engine was the centerpiece of the show, a masterpiece of engineering, just not really viable to mass produce sadly.

https://img159.imageshack.us/img159/7123/800pxovalpistonyi6.jpg

The bike's covered in clever little innovative details though, the seating unit and tank cover are a single piece for example.

If I had money to burn it'd certainly be near the top of my list of pointless bikes I'd love to own Smile

Oval pistons are now banned in GP racing to keep costs down, thats how expensive the bike was to develop!

£100k is stupidly overpriced, but if i won the lottery, i'd buy it!

Just checked his website and autotrader and it seems all his bikes are gone, he also refused a px on my bike for a VFR a few weeks back, maybe he's closed down Shocked

Wonder if he sold that NR?

Awesome to look at.

Anyone predict any future problems that could arrise from such a design?

I'd say as the two rods for each piston are on a seperate journal if the crank wasn't completely true could cause some abnormal wear issues and problems.

Could have problems with the flame front on combustion as the to flames try to combine once sparked.

Ideas?

Think you are right.

Think one concern (and why it landed up with 2 con rods per piston) was that a failed plug would put a large load on one side of a piston.

All the best
