Wondering if many people (particularly those with kwaks) have gone up to a 120/70 from the stock 120/65. Is this accepted as ok? Reason being is im struggling to find any good deals with a 65 profile front.
The bike (2000 ZX6R) currently has a 70 profile diablo fitted and seems ok, but I wouldnt know any different as it was on the bike when I got it so is all Ive known.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of running the 70 and am i just as well sticking with it or should I go back to the manufacturers spec 120/65

I went up from a 65 front to a 70 on my zx6r. Checked with Kawasaki first and the said it was fine, they do it all the time. In fact I think most of the newer zx6s have 70 as standard these days.

If I remember, the XX in 120-XX-zr17 denotes the height of the tyre or the height of the sidewall or something. So it's not like you're cramming a bigger tyre on. Just brings the height up by 5mm.

As for how it affects handling etc. It actually feels slower to turn in than the old 65 that was on there from new (contrary to what would be expected) but that's probably down to other things as well, as I had two new tyres and the suspension set up properly at the same time.

Quote:

175 The tyre section width in millimetres (That is the width of the tyre tread)
70 The aspect ratio in % (the height of the sidewall divided by the tyre's width)
R Denotes the tyre's construction type - in this case it's a radial
13 Rim diameter in inches
82 Load Index
T Speed Rating

The higher the 2nd figure the higher the tyre stands off the rim.

Ye ive done it plenty in past with cars but thats not so vital as long as the rolling radius is somewhere near. My main concern is im having problems setting up my front suspension and wondered if the taller tyre was having some kind of effect. Also, im assuming the speedo will be out slightly (not that there that accurate to begin with).
The more people who say theyve done it and its fine the happier Il be to leave a 70 on Surprised

Skluff was that someone in a dealer who said they do it plenty enough?

Cheers

To test the speedo.
Note rev's/mph on old tyre and then do the same with the new.
Once you have the same rev's you will be able to see how far the MPH is out on the new tyre.

Shame you can't get a 125/70 which should give the same rolling radius... Or would that be 115/70 Embarassed

The 65 or 70 mentioned here is the aspect ratio of the tyre expressed as a percentage of the width Wink.

For example a 100/70/17 would be 100mm wide with a 70mm sidewall height & made for a 17" rim Smile I'll let you work out the height of a 120/70 Laughing.

Btw you wont really feel much differance in the bikes handling by going from a 120/65 to a120/70 & the speedo will be as about as accurate as it was before (not very lol).

^ yup was going to say that it would be 6mm difference as it's a percentage and not an actual figure. (not that I'm bothered but I felt I had to double check in case I was wrong)

It's fine.

Makes it steer a tiny bit more slowly(not that you'll notice) and gives it a slightly bigger foot print when lent over.

Lots of people do it, it makes no difference.
