Only new customers can get it. $200 for the 16gb $300 for the 32gb but if you want to get it and you already have a 3g iphone then its costs shit loads. Something like $200 more! so $400 or $500

Suspect that has more to do with the real cost of the phone rather than the normal price people pay that is heavily subsidised by the contract they take out at the same time.

Check Amazon Frances iPhone prices, where I think they are sold off contract. Hence their non subsidised price of 669 Euro for an 8GB iPhone. Sure O2 will give you one for free, but that is signing up for a (say) £44.05 a month contract over 18 months, so £792 with some free minutes.

If I was AT&T I would certainly not be costing myself a fortune giving people who had signed contracts cheap upgrades.

For the price of the tethering, you might as well get a 3G dongle from Three and get 15GB a month instead of 3GB.

Or just jailbreak the iPhone and get it free.

I agree that they wouldn't give the phones away but surely subsidising them a bit more for existing customers. I understand the contract in effect pays for the phone but an existing customer signing up to ANOTHER 18 month contract can't be a bad thing for AT&T.

If someone was (say) a year into an 18 month contract and wanted to upgrade then they have only paid ~2/3 of the price of their existing phone. Maybe if this was the case they should offer the person a 2 year contract on the terms of an 18 month contract.

Problem is how the real price of an iPhone (amoung other things) is disguised and how people are tied into contracts.

That would be a better way to deal with it I suppose.

Even when we are not talking about bikes you seem to know everything!

The pricing thing, its how apple work though. Keeping everything hidden. Their computers, phones, mp3 players are very secretive. Everyone seems to have one but actually fixing/modifying it yourself is not done easily.

I reckon they cost less than $100 to make so that's £60 for an iphone.

I would never buy anything off apple directly but the iphone is one thing I am considering because using it was so easy and simple. Nokia 5800 is tempting now though

this is why i hate apple. give users no choice of being different. at least other big money companies like Microsoft give you some say in what you can change. sure they give you software that they want you to use but you can remove it if you want. IE for example it drives me mad i hate it(even though the new one is so much better) but you can remove it if you wish easily. with apple you seem to have to use their program as it the only thing that works(well) with their other stuff like ipods. otherwise it just gets a pain in the arse

So what will you miss out on?

More capacity 16GB
Slightly faster processor
More Ram

Does this justify having to buy the new iphone?

I got a 16gb 3g refurb for free so I will only miss out on 3mp and video...pftt not worried.

As for the cpu did you know that the iphone cpu is underclocked out of the box?

appears its an ARM chip that did run at 400mhz when the phone came out and during the 2.2 update went to 420 or so.

depends if you beleive what you read but its the same as IBM did with their servers when they had monopoly by giving users "upgrades" via software.


Get a 3g and save your money for something else, like a battery pack to keep you playing poker on your iphone Thumbs Up

This is what I mean, unless there is a major performance upgrade I still dont believe why waste money. I know there are a lot of people waiting for performance tests to see if there is really a big improvement. I have been looking around for performace and useage demos and things like that but cant find anything.

3mp camera ZOMG wow that is insane...... no thanks if I want to take decent pictures ill use a decent camera.

Longer battery is cool but then again the existing battery of the iphone is not that bad.
