Rossi did a display lap today with Ago.
If I was on the island I would turn my back on him. Giacomo Agostini has earned the right to ride there as he raced there Rossi has not.

I'm sure he'd cry himself to sleep over that, but what is he doing that any of us wouldn't given the chance?

If you got offered the chance to follow a legend around possibly the greatest "track" in the world, you'd say no? Then why should he?

Rossi presented John McGuinness with his garland after todays win. Why? Such privileges are normally reserved for previous champions, IOM dignitaries or some top totty, Rossi is none of these. I do not hate the boy but he should not be there, he has not earned the right

Ask John McGuinness what he thought. Of course you'd have to have waited until he'd finished getting Rossi's autograph....

If I'm to be perfectly honest I don't see the big deal.

I'd be a tad peeved if they gave the task to someone like katie price/ the late jade goody/susan Boyle or a similar chracter , as that would just take the biscuit.

But a icon of todays motorcycling world I'd say it was fine.

Just my pennies.

'Very Very fast...more than abit crazy' quote from Rossi. He's a top notch racer, so no surprise he visited the TT. I personally think its good for the TT that professionals are prominent. It keeps the TT on the world stage and therefore helps longevity.
But can i just say 2 words
John McGuinness. Puking at 1:30am Lap record later that same day. Heroes the lot of them.

And the 'top totty' has earned the right? I would rather be presented with a trophy by a world renowned rider than some bint whose only purpose on the podium is to look pretty and have bubbly sprayed at her.

Rossi is massive in international motorcycling but he trancends that just as (like it or not) Beckham trancends football. Rossi being present at the TT means that the wider audience that are aware of the Rossi/46 brand have just been made aware (or reminded) that the TT is an awesome spectacle. They might not give a shit, but its additional publicity - and that is all good.

The man is a legend, he's an icon and a very well respected motorcycle racer. Everyone knows him, everyone knows how good he is. The small fact that he's not raced at the event has nothing to do with it- he's there to 'give back' to the sport.

Quit whining and enjoy Ago if Rossi is too plastic for you! Thumbs Up

Slightly off topic (sorry Ariel)

Was watching the superbike qualifying the other night, the Mrs was too (begrudgingly).

She asked me if the road racers are more skillful than MotoGP racers considering where/how they are riding. An interesting question which I attempted to answer with a fighting analogy:

Track racing is like boxing. You train and train and repeat your routine over and over until you can do them in your sleep. The race is all about consistency and the difference between winning and losing is very small. Could be your conditioning / preparation (bike setup) that lets you down or you make one small mistake and your opponent gets ahead.

Road racing is like MMA. Complete balls out aggression for which you can only prepare up to a certain point. The rest is about guts and adapting to whats happens in the fight. You have to be the master of many styles. Some of the elements are common between the two, but a good road racer doesn't necessarily make a good track racer and vice-verse.

How would you explain it?

Road vs Track = Boxing vs MMA

Think your analogy is a poor one, MMA athletes put in loads of conditioning and/or repetitive drilling, MMA matches could be won/lost by conditioning faults and/or mistakes. Good boxers are those who can adapt to the conditions and style of their opponent.

I'd say a good motorsport analogy might be road race vs circuit race = F1 vs WRC.

However, it is a bit oranges vs apples.

IMHO, the TT isn't proper 'road racing', as by its very nature, you are racing the clock, not other bikes. 'Proper' road racing (eg the NW200) is the ultimate for me - skill of circuit racing, balls of road racing.

I had the distinct impression that Rossi would be getting John McG's autograph too! Laughing

1930 Ariel I do appreciate your sentiments, however given Rossi's total awe and respect for the TT Racers in the footage I saw, I think that his inclusion is not disrespectful or completely unwarranted and infinitely more relevant than something 'fluffy' Rolling Eyes

Looks like Rossi is not the only track rider to pay a visit to the TT, it's just wherever he goes the media follows, unlike the others...

There's the key to it IMO. If nothing else it's very clever publicity.

I think it's not that inappropriate. However it'd be pretty interesting to see Rossi get a wildcard entry or whatever into the superbikes race, I'd watch that. I know it's a very different discipline but given his status in the motorcycle racing world it is about time he had a go properly.

Was cool seeing ago do the lap, though.

You can see he has massive respect for the guys who do the TT.

I was watching some on board of qualifying the other day, almost crying at the terrifying speed they do down the narrow streets. Massive balls!

Probably the same ITV footage I saw. Rossi was leaning against a wall, in amongst hedges/trees, visably impressed by the racing he was watching. He was hardly standing by the grandstand looking for TV cameras.

Remember this is a PR stunt as well, which all sports personalities have to do, but its good for the TT too.

Its good that Rossi wants to come back and do some more laps, maybe he will get the bug and try and race it Very Happy. I doubt it but would be cool Cool

Funny with all this ranting about Rossi, yet I've never heard one of the TT riders complain about him?

Maybe because they know what it takes to be a quick rider, no matter what track you ride on Smile

More like five years to be brave enough to ride it. Laughing

As Luke and Silver said, the footage I've been watching has been on ITV4 - quite extensive and detailed, although much of it is repeated throughout the week.

Clearly the stuff we see is mainly the direct face to camera bits and yes he's a bit of a poseur, but I certainly didn't think there was any air of 'couldn't care less' quite the opposite!

In fact that ITV4 coverage is just being played out again now (17:00) Laughing
