Car Advice

Hi all
Been looking at cars and found 2 i like.
1st is a Bmw 318i M Reg.
Question is its done 102k miles. Is this too much for a bmw or are they solid engines.

2nd is a VW Polo which has done 77k miles. Again anyone know if these are reliable cars?

Polo is your best bet, low mileage for the car. I have an N reg one with similar mileage and it just keeps going and going... I'd be suspicious of the BMW maybe being thrashed about, also, in terms of insurance (if you're a young one,) its going to be painfully expensive.

The above is the sensible cautious route. The other one is to say WOHOO and get the beemer, that would be my choice.

Both solid cars IMO.

102k on an M reg car is a little of 7k miles a year, which is very little even though it might sound 'high mileage' it really isn't. The engines in them are solid (no timing belt to worry about). Suspension can be a bit of a problem on the E36, but I'd imagine most of the bushes would have been renewed by this age anyway. Take a test drive and make sure it feels tight.

As for the Polo, you've not stated what year or engine, but again very solid little cars.

insurance shouldnt be a problem as i'm an old fart of 36 with max no claims
i had no plans to get anything like a beamer and wanted a small cheap runaround but then found this and thought ummmm.
its got an mot until june next year so for £500 even if it only lasts a year might be worth it.
just wondered about bmw engines.

I'd have thought you'd know better being a fellow biker!Forget reliability and spec and imagine you were riding your bike,you see a BMW waiting to pull out of a junction and you think to yourself,"he's seen me he's not gonna pull out",but you've been there before,the w*****s gonna cut you off and you know it,because it's his road and he makes the rules.

Mileage is nothing on the BMW aslong as it's got a service history, no point buying an M reg one without as there's plenty with full history for low money. Only thing i'd be concerned about as already mentioned is suspension bushes, not necessarily been replaced so need to have a good look at them and take it over some speed bumps or a lumpy road to check for clunks, squeaks and knocks, check wheel bearings too and bodywork for rust or badly covered rust, at that age will start going on the jacking points located behind the sideskirt plugs, wheelarches, bootlid edges and around the leading edge of bonnet.

This is the bmw i might be looking at tonight.

The ad says
"Mechanical the car is working very well,engine starts without no problem and it's running nice and smooth.It has only 108.000miles which is very good for a BMW engine.
I've recently changed the oil,air filter,and fuel filter.The MOT is valid until April 5th 2010 and tax will expire in July."

I know you cant tell much from pics so i'll give it a going over to check all the bits Phoenix mentioned.

My 316 E36 has done 119K now, had it three years with just tyres, a battery and an exhaust required outside normal servicing. Doesn't use any oil and still drives well, bit tatty round the edges these days though (rusting arches etc), but as I abuse it daily that's to be expected. Looking for a mint 318IS to replace it but need to spend serious cash to avoid all the half baked M3 replicas!
