PostPosted: 18:04 - 09 Jun 2009    Post subject: another tyre thread...... sry Reply with quote

found these on ebay and was just after some opinions on them really, i have always used michelin pilot sport which i am pretty happy with but with the rate i go through rear tyres i have decided to go for part worn's from now on(saves scrubbing in aswell.....which i hate doing).

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300319539577&fromMakeTrack=true

i'm guessing they are a more track biased tyre, which is ok as i have one booked in july(my first), but they need to handle well on the road aswell as the bike is used daily and will be ridden to and from the track which is a few hundred miles each way.

will they be slippier than normal tyres when cold?

will they take a while to heat up etc..

any opinions and advice greatly recieved Thumbs Up Karma

Had a set on my ZXR750, stuck well on dry days and when up to temp.

Slippier than normal tyres until heated up and longer to heat up, especially in damp condition (fell off)- was out for a run and it started to rain and I could not get heat in them at all and a couple of slides meant I stopped trying

how do you think they would cope on a wet track?

how much longer are we talking to get them up to temp in general? twice as long?

A friend uses them on his Fireblade and swears by them. Like the above comment they will take longer to heat up but once there are at temperature are ultra sticky, apparently.

When I came off the bike I had covered about 8 miles, including a wee run up the motorway, after getting the bike MOT'd, road was slightly damp, and when I decided to add a bit more throttle, on a slight bend, to nip past a car; the back stepped right out and threw me off.

As far as the run in the wet was concerned; it started raining, heavily, but was maintaining a road speed of about 60ish on open sweepers; decided I was being a wuss, after about 20 miles, upped the pace slightly and had a slide from front and back at the next bend, so stuck at 60ish.

Stopped after about 50 miles and the tyres of the other bikes I was with started drying off, but the racetecs stayed sodden wet and were stone cold.

Fantastic in the dry and maybe if I was a better rider I could got some heat into them in the wet, but had no confidence in the them or the bike at that point

starting to have second thought's now Confused

the pilot sport's i usually use are really good in the wet stuff. Im pretty tame in the wet anyway to be honest but it's nice to know the grip is there if you need it.

just if the trackday turn's out to be dry i know i will regret not getting some semi-sticky tyre's, choices choices Thinking

Salty how are the pilot sports in the dry?? They seem to be more focused for wet which is making me lean towards other brands - I only ride in the dry so im looking for something super sticky. How do they hold up? Ive heard they are more of a neutral tyre compared to my diablos. How do you find them for tipping in/general flickability?

from my experience, there fantastic whatever the weather. i learned how to knee down with em, they felt solid and didn't even flinch during my hamfisted 50p shaped roundabout surfing lines, just got back from a trip to wales with colin and they took a fair amount of abuse there, again, never felt like they were about to slip. they seem to heat up really fast too.......... which i like Very Happy

i'm not really a mega quick rider so i guess any tyre within reason would cater for my talent Laughing but when i first got the cbr it had brand new dunslip 208's on, which to me felt very plasticy and i had a few hairy moments with them. since getting the pilot sports i've never looked back or even considered changing brands. The only reason im looking elsewhere now is because i cant afford brand new tyre's at the moment and am just scouring ebay for the best used tyres i can find, if some part worn pilot sports cropped up on ebay i would snap em up. really cant fault em Thumbs Up

Cool. Sound pretty convincing! Im trying to decide between The pilot sports, some ContiSport Attacks and Avon Viper Sports. I suppose michelin are the tried and tested but ive heard some good reviews on the other 2. I want to step away from the Pirellis, although I cant really fault them I need a comparison as there the only tyres ive used upto now. Can get Pilots for £145 delivered tho so prob opt for them in the end thats assuming I do finally come to a sodding decision Smile

Thumbs Up

I can't fault my Pilot Sports Thumbs Up (only on a 400 mind you) Not had an issue so far and I've been messing around with suspension like nobodies business.

to be honest, from what i've read/heard about diablo's they are the way to go for a fairweather tyre which can cope with a bit of water if you get caught out. I opted for the michelins because i commute on the bike, which usually means rain. I was looking at the diablo's and the michelins after the dunslips. The reason i chose the michelins was because they had a good reputation for the wet and boasted a decent life span, being good in the dry was just a bonus really.

I think if i was just going to be riding in fair weather i would go with the diablo's as that seem's to be the weapon of choice for the non rusty bikes Laughing .

After looking into race scrubs a little more in depth. It's kind of put me off buying another set really.

Where they are cooked so much on track. They are only good for a set number of Heat cycles. I think the Metzlers are only good for about 4 or 5 heat cycles.

It hardens the rubber, And although they feel soft, To get them up to "working temperature" they need to be even hotter, Which isnt easy / possible to do on the road without tyre warmers or whatever.

Why do you think racers sell such "Good usable" tyres with plenty of tread left?

Because they are fucked.

I know im not one to talk, I've currently got a pair of Supercorsa Pro Race scrubs on my TLR. My next set will be brand new though I think. Just for peace of mind.

i suppose it depend's how you ride really, like i say i'm not a mega fast rider so race scrubs should do me fine(hopefully).

with the racing folk constantly pushing the tyre to the limit there gonna notice when the grip starts dropping off, but for me and i presume most average rider's they should be fine. I could be completly wrong and most race scrubs are infact crap, it's just the way i choose to see it to convince myself the're a good idea Very Happy

Crap, I've fallen off on BT002's on a damp track before, if it's wet or damp but wet tyres on. Had the tyres straight out the warmers, did a lap ok on them, come the second lap down I went. The tyre had cooled down.

@ Binge, they are fucked for track use, but would be ok for the sort of use most people would do the on the road.

Personally I would never used track based tyres on the road. If you get something like a 2CTs or Corsa IIIs they will be plenty good enough for you on track. I did my first trackday on Michelin Pilot Sports and they coped really well.

Dam my impatience Laughing (no impotence jokes please)

Doh!

You indecisive bastard! lol. After changing my mind a thousand times over the last two days I came down to Pilot Sports and Conti Sport Attacks. Decided to give the Conti's a bash, a bit out of curiosity, a bit to be different, a bit because of the price - but mainly because I keep reading awesome reviews about them. (and also a bit because I think they look nice Embarassed

But fuk it Ive made the choice now and seeing as though im certain most decent tyres will give adequate grip for what I use then im sure theyl do the trick. I may give the Pilot Sports a try next time - but we could be talking nearly two yrs before I need to change tyres again Laughing

I use racetecs on my r1 and personally do not get afected by heat cycles as to speak yet, I run them until there is no tread as they just slide and dont grip as much by then which is understandable.
basically the same with any track biased tyre the BEST grip available from the tyre is when they are new and its the same for these the more the rubber disappears the less they grip and they grip better than any road tyre does up until the point when tread is nearly gone.

they are awesome tyres for the track and when the roads are warm/hot they are good but take them on a cold tarmac or rain and then they are scary to use.

Stick with the 2cts Thumbs Up

Salty, you're best off going for some road based tyres mate - if it rains at Anglesey you wont enjoy going around on racetecs..
I used a bt021 last year, it wasnt ideal but still coped well.
Diablo's/bt016's/Qualifiers etc etc will be more than good enough in the dry, and still be ok in the wet too. Thumbs Up
