There's a fast slip road and section of A road I use every day getting to work and back that has quite a few bumps in it. I generally get up to about 70-80ish, but then find the road surface throwing me about a bit. What's the best way to ride it:

A) Keep my weight on the seat meaning my feet sometimes bump of the pedals and I have to put them back on again?
B) Put my weight onto my feet lifting slightly off the seat, meaning my feet don't go anywhere, the ride is more comfortable but I get scared in case one of my feet slips off and I go flying!?
C) Half and half, less comfortable but more stable?

Thumbs Up

B) FTW Cool

Feet shouldn't slip off, pegs should be no-slip...then again, if rubber and you've got sliding shoes on...? *shurgs

A relaxed grip on the bars and seat is always best.

Off-road on uneven ground, being 'loose' and letting the bike move around under you is the best method.

B) - You're helping matters twice here, first by lowering the C of G from the seat to the pegs. And you're using your legs as a set of dampers for your body.

Are you sure it's lowering the centre of gravity? if you're raising your body slightly above the seat then surely you'd be raising the centre of gravity?.. I know what you mean, you'd have your weight resting on a lower point but that weight is still in the same place (if not ever so slighty higher).

Well, ok I'll admit there is some conjecture there, I shared the same concern. However, since you can trace your weight down to the pegs, the weight is acting upon there, and it's not static, like it is when you're supplying the kilos through your rump.

The pegs on the slr are shit for slipping off.The footpegs from a dtr125 are a direct fit Thumbs Up

Made it much better on mine Thumbs Up (they have spikes along them so theres no chance of slipping off.)

I kinda do (b) subconsciously these days.

Every so often a pothole gets the better of me (ouch! bang!) ... but usually if I see a bump coming, I sort of semi-push myself against the footpegs in a half-crouch position: you've got to take your arse about 2cm off the seat, but not commit your feet to the pegs properly, I suppose is the only way to describe it.

That is a great help thanks peeps, to be honest I wouldn't have guessed B) would be the main choice but I do find that works the best. Good info on the pegs too justmetoo125, I haven't ever actually slipped on the SLR pegs, its just the thought of what might happen if I did!

Thumbs Up

The first time I drove over that I shat myself, and I was in my Volvo estate at the time.

I'm sure it must have originally intended to be temporary.

Proper Heath-Robinson roadbuilding.

This one. If you stand on the pegs bending your knees then you can let the bike sort itself out without being bounced around yourself.

Watch this video of Shaun Harris round the TT - he talks about the technique of standing on pegs:

Its bloody terrible, the (not so) funny thing is that a couple of months ago they had it shut for a few days but all they did was cover up the parts you could see daylight through up, I dont understand why a proper surface is so elusive up there.

Either way i still use it as it beats the long phase of the lights on that roundabout
