Anyone heard about this? Controller-less gaming? Seems scarily good if it's not fake.

The first video I saw about project natal looked like some fake pipe dream... then I watched this.

Suddenly it's looking less fake.

What do you guys reckon? Is this going to be as big a let down as the wiimote? Is it going to feel forced in to games that could use the controller easily?

They make it look a lot better than it will be, but it will definitely be good. Computer Vision is a hell of a lot more advanced than it used to be so I reckon this is more than possible, it will take a while to perfect however.. and I also wonder how much space will be needed on the hard drive to hold all the software. I'm not 100% it will be useful for much more than mini games to start with but I will be interested to see.

I didn't watch the milo link you posted but I have watched one before and it didn't appear to be very dynamic it seemed to be an example of an interactive movie more than anything else and I wouldn't be surprised if it would get stuck unless you did the exact thing it was expecting.

Smke mirrors and demo gameplay. The milo one is quite scripted, I know jorno's were trying it out and couldn't get much of him. I think the recognition stuff is pretty cool, like it knows who you are, if you male and female and the voice recognition is cool. But I think this is more for the casual gamers, (wii audience anyway), its not like this stuff is new (eye toy) but the recognition side of natal is quite impressive. I'm more intrested in voice recognition in games, talking interacting with characters.

The videos of the family playing together look scripted, probably showing what will be possible. But again casual gamer audience.

Hardcore gamers needs something to hold, there needs to be some resistance, you needs buttons and sticks FPS's, driving games, and "air" steering wheel is just too lose and vague.

I really don't like the direction video games are taking, if I wanted to do sports I'd go out and do it not play it in my room. Video games are for thngs you can't do in real life like killing zombies and being in the SAS

I hope Sony don't follow suit and get taken in by this bollocks.

I'm hugely interested in the line this is going to take. There's a plethora of possible applications here both in gaming and outside of it. I don't quite understand the number of people whining about replacing controllers though, I'd strongly suspect that it won't replace standard game pads but be an option.

Looks like, a load of over-hyped corporate gameplay-for-the-masses shite, doesn't interest me in the slightest. Just like the Wii, control input will be vague and unsatisfying.

The games will be tedious and elementary.

I like the control and precision a mouse and keyboard gives, I considered it the ultimate combination since first using them to control a game, and have had a strong aversion to joypads since.

Once they have a basic working premise that will sell like hot cakes to the chimps, they will wipe the drawing board of all the original clever and challenging ideas, and shoe horn it into every game possible to flog it like a dead horse for 3 years or so before moving it on another small stage.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but wont hold my breath.

It'll be good for flying through the menus minority report style but that's about it.

I want it to do well though as it looks quite interesting.

Big fat "meh". I can see Milo being bought by lots of paedos.

Recent (last 10 years) games just regurgitate the same old shite gameplay. I don't think there's been an original game idea since about 1993.

I'd rather see them (games developers/companies) concentrate on originality and some serious game AI instead of eye-candy requiring upgrades every 12 months.

I would like to see this technology used for things like weapon selection in real-time minority report style.

being able to fire a handgun western style and lob a grenade with a hand movement.

Changing gears in a car by gesture.

helicopter cyclic controls etc

This would only really need better points of reference for the camera like they us in motion capture etc.

I do feel that they are really only showing us technology I hope they will adapt it to adult uses like shooting, blowing things up, racing around and enviroment manipulation.

Think of real time strategy where you use your hands to manipulate units on 2 points on a map with your hands rather than hot keys and buttons?

I think again for this you would need finger pads for the camera or a glove.

See what happens.....
