This is kind of a chain of bad luck really.
Partly my fault, partly out of my hands, but i think im going to receive some thing for it now.
I live 45 minutes away from work, my commute is sometimes longer due to traffic and what not, most people who work where i do are a stones through away.
Ive been late on a few occasons, not majorly, enough to be noticed i guess but not taking the pee. My boss (old skool that he is) makes a note if im late and when i leave, so im being tracked.
I was off sick (first time since September 08) on monday last week, then Tuesday this week got in 45 minutes late due to being stopped by police on way to work (see thread in random banter). Today, my alarm didn't go off. I woke up at 8am. I start work at 8am. So i called in and was honest, said id be late.
I don't think it's gone down well, my boss is in a meeting right now with someone talking about it i think.
I really dont know what to do, i dont mean to do this, its been unfortunate and im unsure if its not going to happen again. Im worried, its a good job, but far for me to travel, i find it difficult to be punctual.
Ive had a word in my ear before, 5-10 minutes late, i bucked up and was earlier for weeks...ive slipped and im not sure how i can recoup. Im waiting to be called out of the office now.
Anyone been in a similar position?
Im wondering what i can say to smooth this out. I feel shite.
Thanks

Surely simple answer would to be set the alarm 10-15 minutes earlier and not have such as rush to get to work. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Right now I'd go with an apology and explain that you're having a few personal problems at the moment (don't go into details). However, they are being resolved and you'll be back on track and focused.
Don't say it will not happen again as you dig yourself a hole for when it does. Do however say you are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. Add too how you like the place but avoid too smarmy arse licking comments (comes across as insincere)
For the intermediate how do other people work there? I used to get in early before anyone else and leave on time. However, others just got in on time (or even late) but stayed later. The management were never around early in the morning but they too stayed late. They saw everyone else in the office but I'd already gone. So it looked as if I was not pulling my weight. I'm convinced I missed out on a few extra pennies when pay rises came around. Might be worth sticking around so your face is seen and therefore you must be a hard worker.
Long term, sort yourself out a routine. If you can keep to it for about 3 to 4 weeks then you should be ok. It takes that time for the body clock to become adjusted.

I have been in your exact situation.
I was having a few personal problems (seriously, it's not just an excuse! ), and I'd moved back in with my dad. My commute, was 49miles each way - done on the bike.
I used to sleep in until the last possible minute, jump out of bed, rush around the house, and ride like a complete an utter loon (wheelies were a regular thing, even in icy conditions) to get to the office on time.
Living in North Wales, and riding like a loon, you invariably build up a number of points on your licence (unmarked police cars don't like being undertaken at double the posted limit!). So invariably, I too was late due to a tug or three (police, not a fapping session!).
It was during this time that I discovered I intensly disliked the sales team at the company. I was working as a Java Developer, and the sales team were selling products to customers which we didn't have, and promising delivery dates we couldn't meet.
Eventually, I was called into the chairman's office, along with two directors (small company). They stated that I was always late, and asked what we could do about it. I suppose they were trying to help. But I just had no interest in the place, or even the type of work thanks to the pressure.
So I told them straight, and then said that I'd typed out my resignation, and the email was just waiting for me to hit send when I got back to my desk.
The answer for me, was to find a job closer to home. The motivation for that was a lack of money (try jacking a job in without a new one to go to, whilst having bills to pay, it's good motivation!). I now commute 6 miles each way, and I'm generally there at least 30-45mins early. Sometimes I still ride like a loon though. ____________________ Riding isn't dangerous, crashing is. A 'good' ride is one from which you can walk away. A 'great' ride is one after which you can use the bike again. |

I used to do the hearings for people who were late. ( One of my pet hates is lateness ) If someone is late regularly by say 5-10 mins they would be sat down and their options gone over, one was a lad who had to sort out his child care so we made his start time half an hour later, but he stayed half an hour later. it affected his break times but he was happy to be able to go only half an hour later. Others it was a bus issue so were told to get an earlier bus and tough if they are in work 20mins early. Some were just could get their arse out of bed, they ended up being monitored then sacked if they didn't improve. Some employees would be late by some time, most would let us know and the work would be caught up, these were just once in a very long while, some took the piss and so got rid of.
IOf your employer is looking to reduce his over heads and staff are a big over head, then lateness can be a key factor in reducing his work force.
Get your arse into gear, pull your socks up, or whatever. You know the answers, just do it. ____________________ Famous last words of Humpty Dumpty. " Stop pushing me "

That depends on wether or not your boss is a crooked c*nt or not. |
... Or how long you've worked there, if you're in probationary period then you could be at risk.
I'm guessing you're the type to get up and go. I'm the opposite, I've always given myself tv time so that if anything goes wrong I just don't use the tv time, I use the time to fix whatever has gone wrong (hair, make-up, can't pick an outfit as having a scatty morning, lost keys, shoes etc). Admittedly I get up way too early and could probably fit in a whole hours gym routine and still be ready on time, but I just like to relax before I drag myself out of the front door to work. I honestly cannot remember ever being late to work, I even had a bike accident once, got the bike home and still managed to get in to work early. I don't mind working early but at the end of the day when my shift is over I am out of there! ____________________ Alli x

Just carry on making excuses, blame everyone and everything except yourself - it's the modern way.
No-one on here has the magic answer you're looking for; you already know what you need to do.
Feel free to come back and have a nice rant when you're fired, though... ____________________ "That's it. You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college."

What with the morning routine, the family getting ready for school at the same time, I usually end up getting in 5 mins late, and up until recently I would always make up that time plus some extra at the end of the day.
But, my boss has started to moan about it and so for the most part I now get in on time. Thing is now though, I don't do any extra time, and I actually spend less time in the office than I did when I was late all the time.
It seems being not late by 5 mins is more important to them than getting 15-30 mins work free out of my at the end of the day.
That doesn't help you much, I know, but I wanted to let you know you're not the only one who really struggles to be in on time. My biggest problem is that whatever alarm system I use (and I've tried quite a few!) I will, in my sleep, just turn them off without realising what I'm doing! ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |

My jobs great, my start time varies on a daily basis between midday and 3pm and I have a 30mile commute. It means I can be late and usually nobody will be any wiser, the whole operation runs late most of the time anyway so i'm sat around for an hour or 5 doing nothing when I get to work sometimes anyway.
Reason i'm late often is because I also finish very late sometimes and often only have 9 or so hours before i'm due back, so minus 2 hours commuting, getting home and doing anything that needs doing, eating and sleeping it can be very difficult to sleep and get back in on time.
My last job I lived 5miles away, was due to start at 7pm and I was regularly 5-15mins late, occasionally half an hour if I slept through alarm. Got 2 displinary meetings for it and a written warning, got another job before it went any further. A lot of it was just the manager being an arsehole though, he'd make a log if I stepped foot in the building at 1 minute past the hour.
The problem is the same as it's always been for me, I cannot get up in the morning no matter what time I go to sleep, people who are early risers and get up 5hours before work, eat a 4 course meal, watch some tv, do some knitting etc and then arrive at work an hour early like a good eejit don't understand this, but then they also fail to see how people can stay up til 3-4am in the morning before going to bed (which I have to do with this job), some people like the morning, others don't. Living on your own also has a significant impact I think, there's nothing and nobody to disturb you or motivate you to get up. |

You need to change your routine, or youre going to get the sack. I go to sleep at 2 am sometimes, but I get up at 4.30 - 5 am, to start work at 6 am every week day. I'm never late, and my commute is around 30 - 35 minutes.
If you cant do that, you'll get fired. There's no shortage of people who want a job and your boss knows he'll have no problem replacing you the same week (if not same day).
Times are hard, you'll have to resign yourself to the fact that after work you need a shower/bath, and then bed, ready to repeat the next day, and the next etc. ____________________ TL1000s, KDX200 |

I start work at 8.30am. I get up at 7.40am, eat my breakfast, get dressed - do the necessary other bits, leave the house at 8.15pm, 10-15mins I'm at work...on the dot, everyday!
The night before, I have my shower, get everything ready for work, so I do the bare minimum in the morning. I don't have a coffee until I get to work.
I am not exactly a morning person, but I do struggle to stay awake late at night. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |
