Well how do the detectors in hospitals work? They set off a dodgey alarm if you walk through/past them with a phone switched on.

Also, if they are making a change to your contract or company policy, don't they require 30 days notice and you must all agree to the change for it to be implemented?

Our work does the same but nobody turns the phone off they just put it on silent as for mobile phone detectors . . . Only heard of hand held ones that are a pain to use so give them a couple of months and they will get fed up of using them.

Could always get hold of some cheap phones, really low tech ones that the battery lasts ages on and leave them hidden in really awkward places so that their detector gets a constant false alarm. Preferably somewhere so that the thing goes off constantly, if you hide the phone well enough they'd be unable to turn the alarm off unless they simple turn the detector off. It would annoy them enough to stop using it or just simply believe its broken.

They work on the basis that they find a GSM signal, then alert the manager or whoever has the device to the presence. One man wouldn't be able to last long with the manager being a dick but if 3/4 people did it the manager would have no chance. The distance to the signal is actually VERY hard to find unless he spends over £3000 on the device which I doubt he is going to do.

If you're up for pissing him off buy a cheap sim free phone, old school nokias are usually around £10 off eBay, then get some free sim cards from o2 and hide the things in various places. His sensor won't stop beeping and eventually he will give up.

You can also do the easiest thing and find the device which he is using and just steal/smash it when he puts it down for a second. He won't want to pay for another one if he has just spent money on it and will give up the stupid cause!

Presumably the detectors check for microwaves which is what phones transmit, they do it constantly to stay in touch with the network. The only way you could prevent detection is to turn off the transmitter (flight mode) or to jam the detector somehow which would be very complicated and very expensive.

I had the same situation with my old boss when I worked in the pub.
As soon as they started they put into place a no mobile phone policy.
I argued my case that it is there for emergencys whilst Im at work.
I wouldnt use my phone but I would have it on in case Joshuas school had to contact me as I am the only one wh can pick him up in an emrgency.

You need to come up with a convincing argument as to why you need your mobile switched on all the time at work.

Unfortunately your boss will easily quash the "emergencies" argument by pointing out that they can call your work number and speak to you via that.

For myself I managed to get me and my team to be allowed our mobiles on the shop floor as I'm deaf and it was easier for them to find/summon me by texting me or one-ringering me rather than shouting pointlessly down the tannoy.

Is it not easier to ask them why they feel the need to impose such a policy and go to the expense of detectors and the time taken to police the staff when it would have been far simpler to address the staff with their issues and ask for co-operation?

How on earth did we ever manage before the mobile phone?
While in Scotland with no signal last week it reminded me of the days when landlines were used, only real emergencies needed a phone and if it was an emergency the call got through. The phone worshipers of today really do need to look at themselves.
