Was out riding my gsxr today and near enough everytime i put the back brake on the tyre skidded.

Silly question but would this just be down to no grip from the tyre?

Could be a number of things really,
start with simple things like obviously tyre condition, tyre pressure, suspension functioning properly under compression and work from there?

It's probably because you were using the rear brake Confused.
Why were you using the rear brake if you didn't want some slidey action?

Did you have the clutch pulled in at the same time?

Unless he's standing on the brake pedal that shouldn't matter.

always thought the only way of locking the rear is to have the clutch in? surely it'd lock the tyre, stopping the drivetrain completely and stop the engine?

I know i can't lock my rear without the clutch being in.

I could be wrong but would it not just cause the clutch to slip rather than stop the engine?

Have you checked the tension and condition of your chain? if its too loose or mis aligned, it can cause the problems your suggesting. Thumbs Up

Your rear brake is not very good then....

Yes, you can lock the rear with the clutch out, and yes it does stop the engine... Tends to restart when you release the brake, just the same as a bump start.

More often than not though, you hit the back brake, which makes the rear wheel go slower than the bike, thus giving the feeling the rear is locked, when it's not, it's just travelling slower than the bike is.

You can break fairly hard with the rear brake and not lock the wheel. I know this because I use the rear brake a lot - 90% of the time in town I just use the rear.

Plus the fact the current bike's front brake is very poor (although getting better), and so I've been using the rear to slow from 70mph.

Personally I think you are interpreting the information from your bike incorrectly, I doubt it is locking, unless you really are stamping on that brake. If you ARE stamping on the brake then stop, because it is a stupid thing to do.
