You're never going to get a decent looking hair cut with numbers, a scissor cut, always.

^^^ for that I'd probably ask for something like "just over inch long on top with grade 3 back and sides".

But I'd just take the photo in.

The grade system is just a length - number of 1/8's of an inch - grade 3 = 3/8s inch.

I current have a grade 3 all over an look like a moleman Smile

As a rough guide. Grade 3 is the shortest length you could get hold of between your thumb and forefinger.

Grade 0 = no guard about 0.5mm (the best)
Grade 1 = 3mm
Grade 2 = 6mm
Grade 3 = 10mm
Grade 4 = 13mm

Well thats what it says on my clippers anyway.

Not all haircuts have a number! Its a Hairdresser not a feckin' chinese restaurant!! Laughing

My father was a hairdresser for 44 years, and he always said the best way to get the haircut you want is to describe it. Just say you want it short on the back and sides and you want it longer on the top so you can style it. Or as someone suggested take the photo with you. Often hairdressers have photos of current fashionable hair styles all over their shop, so you can probably just point at one of those.

By the way, the numbers correspond to the combs which clip onto the hair clippers. I'm pretty sure they are standard lengths as someone pointed out further up the thread.

Funny when you walk past barbers and they have all these 1980s style haircut photos in the window. Surprised

My dad still has a number from the seventies and eighties in his garage... Laughing

Most hairdressers these days do update their pictures as far as I'm aware! Smile

I always had No 2 back and sides and shorter on top, would let them cut until I was happy with it. That pic looks like No 3 sides, which gets away with just about looking like a cut rather than a shave.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the chap in that photo has had his hair 'layered' on the top and shaved on the sides. He's also sporting a splendid lazy eye, it really is quite mesmerising.

On the subject of those pictures you get in the barber's window, its actually a homage to what town sherriffs used to do in the wild west with outlaws, only with swarthy pedophiles instead.

We in Edinburgh seem to be experiencing a boom in Polish and Turkish salon's just now. Now, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure the Polish establishments can supply anything more complicated than a buzz-cut while the Turkish places only offer hot towel shaves with those straight razor things!

If you ever find hair in your kebab, I think its safe to say, someone is trying to hard to make ends meet.

I normally have a 3 back and sides and a bit on top for styling. I hate to say though due to the credit crunch i can no long afford a haircut. So i employed the services of one's other half. I wanted a short back and sides. I ended up a skin head. I wouldn't mind but with my slightly podgy face from eating to many fairy cakes and a skin head i look like a butch lesbian. So thats a Thumbs Down for letting the wife do your hair. Sad

French crop "oh la la"

Short back and sides (2 or 3)

Layered on top so you dont get a "bowl" haircut.
https://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/fucie_2006/sharon.jpg

Then cut short on top with scissors, they normally show you how much they are going to take off and you can adjust according to taste.

Then normally a run through with the thinning scissors (hurts like a bitch with crap polish hairdressers)

Like this but I normally have the top much more shorter
