Now on my 125, in the twisties, I don't have the acceleration to overtake the traffic moving at 55-/+5mph on the short straights, so I often slow to 40 on the straights, so I have a clear road ahead for the next set of corners to take at a nice speed and then be back behind the cars again on the next straight while they get up to 60+/-5mph.
Because in my experience the cars take these twisties anywhere from 35-45, I tend to be more 45-55 so if I ease off on the straights I can get a nice smooth fast run on the corners, anyone else do this? I get some funny looks from some people when they see me slowing on the straights, but it is one of the few things that makes the trip to work fun, so yeah, am I alone in doing this?

I used to do that on my 125 at a couple of favourite twisty bits.. slow down to give myself space Smile

i dont actually do it, but ive been tempted to.

alot of bikers when in heavy traffic drop back a bit to give themselves a run at overtaking them or to give themselves a clear run at a twisty section.

My bike doesnt really do corners so i normally take them at car speeds, thats probably why i dont do it Wink

In corners I tend to drop back to the outside of the corner to give myself enough viewing room. When on straights however, I accelerate slowly until I am just behind the vehicle ahead, I make sure it's clear, drop down a gear or two, and redline my way past Very Happy.

There used to be two nice corners on my journey to work.. which I did on my NSR.

Realy pissed me off when one time I'd slowed down to let the cars infront ahead and someone overtook me uphill just coming up to a blind lefthander, then went round the corner slowly. Bitch.
If I'd hadn't have been late for work I was going to follow them to where ever they were goign... just for intimadatory value if nothing else. (Was a particularly dangerous overtake, nevermind the fact I missed my favourite corner.)

Dont bother slowing down for cars, if there's a car infront I'll accerate full throttle upto and if there's enough room to get between the car in front and a car coming the other way I'll go between them.

I dont have a problem overtaking on short straights, normally going twice as fast as the car by the time I'm behind it.

Yes but you ride a 2 stroke 125....?
I don't have that power at my hands, so rather than risk a slow overtake, I will hold back, and just enjoy the corners, I'm in no rush, just enjoying the ride :>

Even now on my 6 if I can't overtake cos of oncoming traffic then yeah, I will slow down to get some space for the corners.

I do that too, but have got in arguments with people who say it would fail you on the drivin test - Reckon it's best to start accelerating before you pull out so you fly past them rather than pull out then accelerate!

In order to accelerate first you need to be dropped back. As well as having room to speed up (and slow again if you have to abort the overtake) you can also see more from further back.

To get a decent run at darley moor i was going really slow so that there was a good quarter of a lap between me and the bike infront. The R1 was slowing me down Wink

I used to do this. I still do. Even though I have the speed to overtake, I dont always. I love the countryside and views and will take my time to enjoy my journey...unless its to and from work (M3)

I have been told that 15 mph above or below the speed of the traffic is the safest place to be, so I often take the lower speed. I often get there just as quick as someone (in 4 wheels) who is going fast then slow then fast then slow.

Dont feel obliged to go fast just cos other bikers do - do what you feel most comfortable with. That way you are more likely to preserve your life & that of your bike and enjoy the thrill of biking.

You will soon find that your bike doesnt go fast enuff for you...and soon be moving on thru the ranks to a quicker bike - it happens to the best of us! Very Happy

Already happening, I am going out riding with my Dad on sunday, and he is letting me try his 500 out, and soon I will do my 33bhp test and get myself a nice big(ish) bike Smile
And yeah, going fast is good, but nothing beats a nice smooth ride as opposed to adjusting to the slow cornering/odd behaviour of cars. Smile

hehe, try a 4 stroke 125 Smile. Good advise in there, although I'd only use the slowing on straights thing if it was a long journey rather than a quick pop to a mates house.

I go pretty quick round the twistys and along strights, just overtake 1-2 cars just before the corner or something, just overtake whenever no cars are the other way. Just remember theres only 2 speeds speed limit or just keep the trottle pined Very Happy. Oh i have an RS125.
