PostPosted: 19:09 - 14 Jun 2009    Post subject: Mod 1 Test, question?? Reply with quote

Hi,

i have my mod 1 test tomorw and have just been out to a car park to practice u turns slow riding ect,

i also did numerous emergency stops from about 20mph up to 35.

Ive just got a query about the emergency stop and how they mark you on this as every time i did it as so do by the dsa and other members front brake first then on the rear aswell while hlding the clutch in before comming to a stop and whenever i was doing this bracking a was going a few metres forward until i came to a standstill especially over 30 mph.

Just wandering if they have a little bit of leeway of not immediatly stopping or do you have a certain distance you have to stop by.

Sorry if this sounds a rather silly post

thanks

i think by the sounds of it your problem is pulling in the clutch whilst braking, this is bad, should only be used at last second before coming to a standstill to stop bike stalling.

i was taught

- front brake (progressive)

- back brake (take care not to lock it up, caused by the clutch and too harsh braking)

- front brake to a stop (clutch in at last second)

its not a set distance you are meant to stop over, but imagine a hazard jumping out at you and you either brake in time... or you dont.

however i did the old test.. isnt the new one a controlled stop (used to be emergency stop Rolling Eyes ) inside a squared coned area after a speedcheck device to ensure you going 31mph?

The old one made me laugh,

Examiner: Now, im going to wait here, i'd like you to ride around the block and when you get back to me i will put my hand up, this is the sign to do your emergency stop, understand?

c_dug: yup *goes around the block but uses the opertunity riding for the first time on a 125 with no examiner or instructor to misbehave (i.e. see if a CG will wheely....Continues around block untill examiner is in sight and accelorates to 30mph Shifty ok 25ish, in full knowledge that the examiner doesnt know how fast im really going*

Resault: Pass

Examiner was a wanker when we got back to the test center...

"im afraid i have to tell you some bad news conan" *pauses just long enough for my stomach to sink Sad *

"you got 5 minors, but you passed"

Took me a real 10 seconds to grasp the fact that he was winding me up Laughing

Top guy really Thumbs Up

also do you think it would be best to change up to 3rd gear to get up to speed or stay in 2nd and use the engine bracking to help slow me odnw

You're confusing the stop and the swerve.

On the swerve you go through the 50kph speed check, swerve around the blue cone, then come to a normal "controlled stop" with your front wheel inside an area marked by 4 blue cones 31m away.

On the "emergency brake" manouevre you go through the same speed check, the examiner holds his arm up and you carry out a controlled emergency stop, just like the old test except it's not on the road.

To the OP don't clutch in until the bike is near stopped and the engine is about to stall. Your engine braking is helping you stop quicker, if you clutch in too early you'll lose that.

It doesn't matter if you stall the engine, just start the engine, go through the gears back to first, do your mirror and shoulder checks and carry on to the next part of the test.

An instructor I was talking to recommended staying in second with the throttle wide open and rolling off the throttle to kill some speed as soon as you go through the 50kph gates.

How can you fail it 3 times in a row? You must be a complete moron and not paying any attention whatsoever.

I took the old style "on the road" type test... and when it came to the E-stop the powers that be gave me a hell of a big break (pun not intended)

I crashed my bike 45 mins before the test started by making a neanderthal grab at the front brake and managing to lock it up...so evidently i was a bit uneasy about actually using it as it should be used... had a bit of a ride round.. at which point it started bucketting it down, proper machine gun rain where everything gets soaked immediately. Rain stops by the time i do my manoevres, U-turn nailed... emergency stop.. using the time around the block to practice a Stop... comes the one infront of the examiner i was a pussy with the front brake and thought i had failed....

Came to the end.... "I like how you didnt go the whole nine yards with the front brake on that stop....nice one mate!"

3 minors, Pass!

I may be wrong but between all of the above don't you pull in the clutch change down to 1st, let it out helping the bike to slow down through engine braking, and then pull it in when you come to a stop.

(in reference to the older on the road test)

its an emergency stop, dont have time to change gear in a real situation!!!!!!!!!!!

you stop with the clutch in, in whatever gear you are in. do a lifesaver, and wheel it to the side of the road upon which you change into neutral and have a breather.

f*ck knows how its done on the newer test.

Why not? I have had a few occasions where I have had to emergency stop and been able to do it! Sure for an inexperienced rider it is not worth worrying about, but for anyone with a bit of experience it should be easy?

whether you can or not its not warranted or nessessary for the test.

my tip is to rest your foot on the back brake but dont actually put force on it. the force of you braking with the front will shift your weight forward and you'll press it naturally. this way there is little chance of you locking the wheel.

as you stop, cluch in. look right, look left and peddle it to the side of the road. into neutral and rest Very Happy

dont know if its the same deal with the new test tho as regards to what you do once stopped but hey.the stopping is the important bit Smile

irrc you have a reasonable distance to come to a complete stop in.
I think you will even realise how far you would have to go before they would fail you.

I think the emergency stop it doesn't matter which gear you are in as long as you stop and I don't think they even take into consideration your use of the clutch as long as you don't stall.
That said you should be able to pull the clutch in as soon as you see his hand go up.

Clear these things up before you do the test.
regardless of what anyone says on here they may expect different things from you.

Just remember to keep your head up and stick your feet down when you stop Smile

They know you're still new to it so don't expect it to be perfect but within an acceptable range. So don't panic yourself too much.
Take it easy and you will be fine. Thumbs Up
