Car Indicators on motorways. Going out of fashion?

Is it me or are more and more car (and truck) drivers not bothering to indicate when pulling in and out on motorways?
It could just be that the high volume of traffic makes it appear more common.

A lot more people might give one flash (easily missed if blinking) before, or even after , swinging out sharply. Often it appears to be as a result of deciding very late to pull out having reached a vehicle in front. So you need to keep a lookout on their behalf.

I can't understand the mentality of swinging in/out in front of oncoming vehicles, especially without signalling intent. I presume it comes from the feeling of invincibility.

I've never understood why you need to indicate when pulling onto a motorway. You're going down a slip-road which ONLY goes onto the ONE WAY motorway. What else are you going to be doing except joining it?

Very true, although on a long slip road there could be numerous points to enter the flow.

I'm more thinking about when people are on the motorway though.

I've given up looking for indicators on motorways. Either they aren't used and they just swerve out like you say, or you get people who've left them on giving out confusion.

I watch the tyres instead like my Dad taught me 13 years ago, they are the only thing you can rely on.

When you're doing 70 and you're overtaken by someone doing 90, why do they bother indicating that they're pulling in? It's not as if you're going to run into them is it?

Alternatively, why do people pass you with 5mph advantage, then nearly take you out as they dive back to the security of the lane you're in, usually indicating after they've cut you up???

Depends how busy it is really. If no one is there to benefit from the indication then i dont bother. But most the time i do it without thinking

Its not all drivers I do about 45k miles per year in my car and about 10k on the bike. I happen to like my creature comforts, I also like my sat nav and my heated seats, but I am also aware of the presence of mirrors and indicators and 'cagers' get just as wound up by sh!te drivers as anyone else.

At least on a bike you can move a Ford Galaxy or a BMW from the middle or outside lane with just will power, in a car you need a small miracle. (how many times do you go down a dual carraigeway and the offside lane is chock full of idiots and the nearside lane is empty?)

I'm not sure what is worse, the idiot that indicates and then uses mirrors (maybe) and tries to bully a lane change, or the person that concedes to the bullying and allows the idiot to change lane.

The only thing that causes stress on the roads is other people....if we were to get rid of them all everything would be OK

ISTR the Police Roadcraft Manual says "When making a manouevre, consider the use of a signal, if it would benefit other road users"

This is the system I use and it makes you look all round before making a move.

Don't go on the motorway on your test. So wouldn't teach anything about motorway 'rules'.

An indicator is nothing. It's a flashing bulb, means fuck all.

It's funny, as I'm going to assume a lot of the times you pull up behind a car on the motorway, you're doing over the legal limit? So why should they move out of your way just because you're speeding..

I find it's just easier to make my way infront of the group and then there's nothing to worry about.

However, I always indicate. I even seem to do it late at night when there's no one else around.. Force of habit.

After a long journey today down the motorway, I was beginning to think that my indicators (on the Discovery) weren't working. I would have them on but people wouldn't be moving out of the way when they could, and would be giving funny looks as they went passed. Turned out one of the kids (who was sat in the boot) was pulling faces at them all and they were too busy staring or pulling faces back at him.

I got a good one for when people will not let u out:

Point your head at the door mirror and just move your eyes from infront and to the mirror whilst indicating....Usually works..

There's the rest your head on the seatbelt, close left eye and drift to the road markings slowly...

If you have passengers, rest head on seatbelt, close right eye and drift to the rumble strip.....

People do what they want in cars these days, because the feel so safe. They should remove all the airbags from cars and fit a big metal spike on the steering wheel, then people might drive a bit more sensibly.

Even if they indicate they dont really take a good look - twice ive almost been swiped recently.
