Nope. It just increases the risk of fire if the bike backfires.

No but to make it start easier try to find out what the problem is. Have you put a new plug in it?

Yes, exactly what finglonger said. basicly, If everything on your bike was doing its job and maintained correctly, it will start. if it is having trouble starting then you need to find the source of the problem, but do it methodicly, most simple and cheapest options first. obviously for a motorcycle to start it need (clean) air, fuel, a good spark and plenty of compression. so check for fuel, check it at the tap and see if you have good flow. check you battery isnt dead, and check for a spark. if you have been turning the engine over for a long time and it hasent started, you have more than likely duffed the spark plugs. if u have fuel and a good spark, then i would check your carberettors if u have them, but never strip your carbs unless u believe it is neccesary. 75% of ''carb'' problems are normaly ignition related.

I did this on a gs500, not only did it catch fire but deafened everyone in a 40miles radius.

Needless to say, 3 OAP's died that evening.
