On a duel carriage way today i had my bike in fifth gear doing about (indicated) 70, and the revs were at 9k, redline is 10k, is that thrashing it too much? or is it okay to maintain that speed?

I wouldnt keep it like that for too long. You might find your legs getting very hot very quickly!

I dont think there is much wrong with that. Yes its close to the redline. But as long as you service the bike, and let it warm up, where is the harm in the situation? I drive a little nissan car, and when i am on the m.way its pretty much redlining it all the time. 1.0 lr engine... 85 top end.

These machines were made to do that type of work.

Id say dont ride faster than 70mph, that is the limit anyway. 9k rpm or whatever that sounds fair to me. ride at the speed it is safe to do so. Riding Safely always comes before bikes mechanical interests.

my CB125 rev's alot higher than that. Ever since riding 20 miles with it red lined followed byt he thing ceasing i now try to keep it off redline for long stints.
It's only a small engine so give it a break now and then! Razz
typically you want your bike going at around 3/4 of its top speed. so if your bike does 100mph, then going everywhere balls out will stress the engine alot, especially if its just a little air cooled engine. Where as the thing should hapily fly along at 75 for forever and a day Smile

basically it depends on your engines age and how well maintained it has been, together with how for your traveling. i wouldnt recommend 70mph for anything more than a couple of miles. the thing should plod along at 55-60 perfectly happily

I would say it depends on the age of teh bike etc...

I have a respect for mechanical things and do not like to thrash them.

From what you are saying your bike does around 80 - 85 top end?

If you are sitting at a constant 70mph, it should be okay.... Confused

Keep it well serviced, keep an eye on temp etc....

I think engines have a sound to them, there is a comfy sound and a thrashing sound. Put the bike where you think it sounds happy. If your feet start to get wet and warm and there is an oil burning smell in the air. Also on your regular rear observations you notice that there is a fog following you down the road, back off a little Wink

I think its top speed is -indicated- 80 which is probably closer to 70 and thats pushing it as hard as it'll go

There are worse things you can do.

On my dr I've sat with full throttle held, often about 500rpm off the redline for 25+ miles on the M4. (and yes, the camchain had already gone dodgy Smile ).

Once its warm, just thrash it. Change the oil every 1000 miles, check the valve clearances every 2 or 3k, do the air filter when its dirty, and spend the rest of your time thrashing the bollocks off it. Its a 125, you aren't going to do more than 10k on it.

well my sachs redline starts at 10,000 rpm and I've ridden it to london and had it at 11,000 sometimes more but I do let it warm up before thrashing and I change the oil and filter every 1,500 kms so that helps I havent had one problem with it no smoke and It still dont let me down Laughing it's only a 125 and I rarely let it drop below 8,000 just keep it well serviced and it will be ok

I find when you get a bit of valve bounce and blue smoke it is time to let off, a little Wink

Those little engines are renowned for being reliable, things wear out quicker when thrashed especially when cold obviously, but as long as the oil is changed reguarly and the coolant is topped up etc I am sure you will have no problems Smile

Cos the're crap and you'll probably sell it before you blow it up...

Trust me, stick to the limit ie 70 MAX if its safe to do so. 9k rpm will be ok.

Just dont redline it and keep it there.

Just service it well and let it warm before giving it some stick, as described earlier... It'll be ok.

Im all for mechanical sympathy, but sometimes you have to use your engine... Mr. Green

btw ive seen yamaha sr125s with shed loads of tough miles on them.
