I've been having an argument with some random (and stupid) Americans, who think it is perfectly acceptable to refer to English people as 'British', but think it is insensitive to use the word in reference to the Scots or Welsh.

The point I have unsuccessfully been trying to put across to them is there are 3 separate countries making up Britain, and to refer to any individual from these countries as 'British' can be insulting. I was born in England, to English parents, therefore I am English. I am sure that my Irish and Welsh great-grandparents were fiercely proud of their countries, too.

I just feel like they're sticking two fingers up at me and telling me that my country doesn't matter. But then, maybe I'm just being sensitive.

Thing that I notice in the press whenever say a sporting event is on.

If an Englishman is doing well he's English
If an Englishman is doing badly he's British
If a Scotsman is doing well he's British
If a Scotsman is doing badly he's Scottish

If I'm doing good I guess you could say I'm British, Brit(ish)..

What is up with you? I'm British, I was born in the United Kingdom. England is not currently a country. Scotland is not currently a country, Wales is not currently a country. They are merely principalities. For years Americans have mislabeled anyone from the UK as 'english' and now they are finally getting it right you want to change them again? Rolling Eyes

I like wales, I like scotland, I've never been to Northern Ireland, but I want them to stay as the United Kingdom. Sure, England is the economic powerhouse compared to the other three, but I'd rather have Scottish oil than not, and I'd rather have welsh countryside etc than not.

If we end up as seperate states we'll then be immediately swallowed up by Europe. The only way we can keep our independence from a european superstate is to stand together as one nation. You are aware that the devolved parliaments were only started as a prelude to us joining the united states of europe? It just so happens that each principality in the UK is just the right size to match european local government models.

So you don't like being lumped in with two other small countries, yet you describe them as being from not one but two continents, spannning thousands of miles with the 'tallest' stretch of land in the world? Wink

I often find it amusing that Scottish and Welsh people don't like being called 'British', but even better wind-ups are had by describing them as English Razz.

I am a European of Russian extraction living in England and think of myself of all of these and also as a Britain but most of all as a Brummie. The children I work with collectively speak 37 home languages but are still British and Brummie.
