The ignition key on my 2003 hornet 900 won't turn. Worked perfectly yesterday and every day for the past 6 months since I got it. Now it doesn't.

I've tried the spare key too, but no amount of wiggling will make the bugger turn.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I've tried squirting WD40 into the barrel (I know it's not ideal but I'll lube it properly once it's fixed).

Surely there's some provision by honda for occasions where the barrel fails yet the HISS is fine? Is it possible to take apart the barrel to repair it?

Help!!

i had that problem with my ignition on my 600 hornet (i havent got hiss though)...

i tried the usual wiggling and wd40 - didnt work.

THIS Will SOUND SILLY......
I pushed the bike straight into a wall whilst trying to turn the key, it bounced abit and then the key turned. havent had the same trouble scince.

i would only use this as a last resort though, i did it through anger and frustration! Laughing

my cbr does this sometime's, has a habbit of fixing itself though. just add more wd40 while repeatedly pushing the key in and out of the barrel to get all the wotsits moving, i find being persistent pays off with mine, usually once it starts working it will work fine for quite a while.

Someone has superglued your lock and they are going to come back when you are at work and nick the bike!

nope, lock hasn't been superglued, because it worked once last night, and until I took the key out it worked perfectly. Once the key came out, it wouldn't work again and hasn't worked since.

Any other ideas?

Hi

Try moving the bars while wiggling the key. Sometimes the pin for the steering lock can't move (probably when it is pushed against the side of the hole it locks into).

All the best

Keith

nah, the steering lock isn't engaged so can't be that. Currently trying to find someone that has a special Honda tool so I can take the lock out and get it looked at. Fowlers in Bristol (rubbish - don't go there) say it'll be two weeks, even though it's literally a 5 minute job to undo two bolts. They won't lend / hire the tool either. Bloody buggers!!

I had the same problem on my hornet 600 also... it was the key. It was twisted a little. Twist it back with a pair of pliers (aslong as you have a spare) and try again. Failing that, try the spare.

Hope you get it sorted.

Dont use WD40. Get an old HB pencil and break the lead out of it. Rub it all into your key, and try agai. The graphite is what locksmiths use to lubricate pin locks (although they use a tub of powder, not a pencil!)

It lasts longer, and is more effective

Had the same problem with my Varadero 1000, Loads of WD40 and play with the key. My steering lock wouldn't engage but after a little play and loads of WD40 it works fine now. I did put 3in1 oil in afterwards to lube up again. Some say to use graphite as a dry lube but I have never tried this yet.
