having a go at fitting my own tyre's this weekend, was just wondering, what would be a good lubricant to get the tyre's on/off the rims. I was going to use fairy but read somewhere that it can corrode the inside of the rim which ultimately leads to leaks... which are bad.

Personally i use bubble bath solution, and i've never had any corrosion problems. You could use spray on grease or maybe wd40, but i think it would do strange things to your tyre.

just neat bubblebath? or if diluted, what ratio?...roughly

not sure on the wd40, i think you have to use something that will evaporate or dry, otherwise you could end up with the tyre spinning round the rim lol

Just slap the bubble bath on, no diluting it.

Smells nice too. Mr. Green

When you pump the tyre up, most of it is forced out of the bead so you can just wipe it away.

I used neat bubble bath when i fitted my tyres on the xr400, and i go off roading a lot without rim locks and i don't have problems with them slipping.

Which is exactly what WD40 does, it also seems to slightly 'melt' the rubber, leaving it slightly sticker, to stick to the rim.

What bike are you changing tyres on, out of interest?

soap would be a good bet, dampen the bar of soap and rub it round the rim, then rub it round the inner rim of the tyres too. Should slip on like a good un.

I've just used slightly diluted washing up liquid for years and never had a problem Thumbs Up

I think you can buy proper tubs of tyre soap for not much money ... but personally I can't even justify that when washing up liquid works so well Smile

Never something I have done although I imagine hairspray would be a good one. Works with handlebar grips so don't see why it wouldn't with tyres. Dries out sticky too so would be better than wd40 or any grease.

yes, i bought some of those clip on rim protector things, some stick on weight's and used 2 gutter spikes for cast iron guttering for lever's(worked a treat).

i used that in the end, my mum said i couldn't use her bubblebath Laughing

was easier than i thought to be honest, the only difficult part was breaking the bead on the first tyre, i had perfected my bead breaking mechanism by the second tyre so it should be alot easier next time. the first tyre took about 2 hours but once i had got the jist of it the second only took half an hour, i found the back was more co-operative than the front as it seemed to have alot more flex in it. For anyone thinking of doing it i recommend you buy 3 or 4 rim protectors as i found i was getting a bit stuck with just the two.

Im really glad i know how to do it now as i do seem to get alot of punctures and generally use tyre's pretty quickly and having to scrounge lift's to the nearest shop and sit around for an hour really annoyed me.
