Hi,

I want to respray my NC29 sub frame. I have no experience in spraying anything. Can anyone tell me the steps and equipment I need please? Thank you.

i second on the powder coating. much higher quality finish, and tougher than paint. Find a small backstreet place and pay cash. you can have the frame back in a few hours all ready to rebuild!

if you want to do it yourself....

1) buy some wet and dry sand paper. (should be black and about 200ish grit should be ok.)
sand it down so it looks dull and if theres any deep scratches sand them down to bare metal to reduce the mark.

2) clean and dry thoroughly.

3) 1 coat of primer is optional but a good idea as it will give a smoother finish.

4) 2-3 coats of paint.

5) 2-3 coats of laquer. (the laquer is thinner than paint to keep your distance and spray till it looks wet.)

things to remember....

any dents, lumps or deep scratches on there before painting will be seen when its finished.

if you want you can give a very very light sanding between coats of paint, this will make it smoother and shinier when finished.

try to keep it away from dusty areas.

id recommend hanging it up to spray then you wont have to touch it.

spray difficult to reach areas first to prevent runs

many light coats is better than 1 thick coat.

Hope this helps you.

Personally, as said before, i'd get items like the frame, forks, and wheels powder coated. It wont cost you a lot if you ring round the local engineering firms and ask if they're able to do it - i spect it'll be a bit smaller than what they're used to!lol!

Then items which arent going to be as hard wearing, and need to look really good, paint as normal.

Getting a subframe coated won't cost more than £40 I would have thought.

Thanks for all your imput. Smile

I will try to see how much it cost to power coat the frame, I reckon it wun be so cheap here in singapore. But if's affordable i'll definitely do it. If not I'll have to do it myself. Thanks again.

Hi guys, I have contacted my local power coating companies. Most of them mentioned something about sand blasting before power coating. I was told this was to prepare the frame for powdercoating. Could I just sand and remove all the paint and smooth it out and send it for powdercoating without sand blasting? Thanks.

I would think that as long as you get the items perfectly clean, and paint/dirt free, they should be ok.

The sand blasting is to prepare the surface, and remove all of the old dirt/paint/grime/etc from the surface to prepare it.
