Dont get the £499 one.

Its most probably chinese and will be terrible.

Get her a known brand cheapish moped.

Yamaha Neos, Yamaha Aerox, Peageot Speedfight etc etc.

Also, dont do any modifications to it, apart from de-restricting it if you want.

i can only agree, for £500 you can probly get a decent well known brand scooter, not a new one, but all the same, a decent one, done a quick search on ebay, they seem to be around £700 for a nice one.

wheyyyyy

you could take all the restrictors out and it will still be good for abour 45mph

chances are if its second hand, this will have already been done.

im not sure how savvy you are with peds, but maybe you could show her the Aprilia rs 50 or Yamaha Tzr 50 got geares and a clutch same as a big bike.

pshh get her a nice 125 mate.

there's a bloke on themotorbikeforum selling a pretty good sym xs 125 for 400 quid! i think they're quite reliable and are alot like the ybr.

the most dangerous part about mopeds are how slow they are! plus a bunch of chavvy ped boys might turn up and try and race Laughing

Definately dont go for the £499, they're always chinese pieces of crap that will either kill your daughter or the ped itself will die within a week or two and be effectively scrap. Also they usually turn up in pieces so some assembly required Laughing

A decent 2nd hand jap one is your best bet Smile

I would much rather my kid had a 125 rather than a 50.

125s are safer.

i think hes thinking along the lines of.

if they do 30mph, at least if she does happen to crash its gona be 30mph - slower = safer

or a 125 doing 70mph and crashing, coudl come out alot worse.

i hear people saying things about de-restricted ones being safer, has any1 crashed a 50cc ped or caused a crash by doing 30mph in a 40mph zone, probly not.....

If she's 22 she's old enough to get her own damn moped!

Don't get a cheap new one, and I'd suggest avoiding a Speedfight from my brother's experience, although it may just be that his is a dog. Sound advice to try and get an unmodified one too.

But really she should be looking at getting a 125. More reliable, and probably less dangerous. And more useful- quite happily did 120 mile + runs on my 25 year old CG125, wouldn't do more than 30 miles on a 50cc...

If you want the retro look without paying the vespa price, i would suggest looking at the Aprilia Habana.

I understand where you're coming from, being restricted to 30mph may seem safer (the slower the better, from your point of view) but I can honestly say (from experience of riding friends mopeds back when I was 16) that people get very annoyed when you do 30mph, even in a 30mph limit area and get rather aggresive with their driving (overtake in silly places etc). I'd reccomend you get something that can be derestricted but won't go above 45mph even in full power. A good example of such a bike would be a Piaggio Zip 50, they're very light too so perfect for a beginner and as the newer ones are 4-stroke they require little maintenance.

You mentioned High Beach in one of your posts, which means you're very local to me and a few other guys on this forum who I go riding with, do you go to the Epping bike meets? we should go for a ride. Mr. Green (preferably without the 30mph moped, ahem).

honestly a humble 4 stroke 125 is perfect. not quick but not too slow to piss off other drivers. it's a massive task trying to get to get up a hill on a 50 aswell.

bill, imagine being on a tiny bike having to go 30 on a dual carriage way with cars flying past you Shocked trust me, it's not nice

did it 25 years ago.i have my old hyosung hack its a 125 she just cant get the clutch thing at all as she calls it Laughing so a 50 ped seemed like a good idea and she was the one that found the ped for 500 pound not me.i would love her to get a cg then i could nick it. and a 50 will be cheep to insure she would only use it for local trips to go round her mates or shops no way is she going H/B with me and the boys nooooooooooo chance. picture it h/d 1200 buell city x gsxr 600 cbf 250 vfr 750 600 bandit and a ped it would take a week and that's just family. me uncles cousins

Seriously, a 4t 125 or even a de-restricted 50cc 2t, Is a damn sight safer than a restricted 50.

Impatient cagers make it unsafe for Restricted Moped Riders. Making dangerously close overtakes on single carriage roads because they cant be bothered to sit at 30mph for a few hundred feet.
