An eventful evening for me tonight.

I was supposed to be driving up to see my ladyfriend in london, but my car eat it's clutch cable, so I was riding up on the RF600.
About 20 minutes into my journey at about 90mph, I suddenly started to lose power, not unlike running out of petrol, so I went to reach for the fuel tap, and suddenly heard a massive chuddering slapping noise similar to a train. Remembering reading a thread about Stinkwheels girlfriend's gpz and pulling in the clutch, I quickly did so. The engine slowed and I sighed releif, only for a huge smoke cloud and a few flames licking around the downpipes to appear, leaving me blind coasting to the side of the road. I made it to the side of the road, jumped off and ran away like a little girl Laughing

After about 10 minutes the smoking stopped and after a quick fag I rang the AA who then asked me if I would need a spark plug to fix my 'fucked engine, it's smoking, leaking and was on fire'. Eventually I got through to her that it was FUBAR and that I would not need a van to check, but a recovery flatbed thing.

Apparently because I was on a motorway I got priority, which meant I'd only be there for around 3 hours Rolling Eyes While I was sitting at the side of the road the traffic officers turned up, told me they could fine me for leaking oil onto the road and then left after I told them I would be picked up.

So people of BCF, what should I do now, I'm going to drop the engine tomorow, but I haven't got a clue what to do from there, apart from throw it in a skip and buy a new one Laughing

I would have told the traffic coppers to fuck right off if they said that to me.

Having a shit night and some jumped up arsehole comes along threatening to do you for something you have little control over.

Wankers.

Its great to see these angels of the motorways providing a much needed service Thumbs Down
So when some car blows up then burns itself to the ground their job is to point out to the distraught owner that they may want to nip off to the local shop for a dustpan and brush so they dont get fined for littering!

If they didnt check the road for oil surely knowing that after asking you there was potantially oil on the road doesnt that make it their problem?

Or am i missing the point of what they do?

This would prob get more useful responses in the workshop section Thumbs Up

Hope you get it sorted though

Hi

While it could be an oil leak (eg, the tubes up the front draining oil from the head back to the sump), that it lost power suggests something more serious. Possibly low oil pressure caused a seizure, but my guess would be a con rod making a break for freedom through the front of the engine.

All the best

Keith

lol. Well put.

Sounds pretty terminal what every it was.
Keep us updated for sure!

My chain decided to fly nest on the motorway so coasted to the hard should and the Traffic officers had a pretty optimistic view of it being left somewhere down the motorway, essentially the guy just said, "Don't worry it'll break up and dissapear soon enough".

Didn't get a chance to drop the engine today, but took the fairings off and theres oil everywhere, I shall clean it up and get photos for your perusal.

Now, to decide whether to shell out 300 quid for a new engine for a 600 quid bike, or to get what I can from it and start again.

Well, I took the fairings off (well I cheated and took the fin panels off been working so much)

At the front lhs where the bottom meets top, on the join, the big shell is protruding from the casing. It has not only punched a hole through the front, it's also left impact stresses on the back side of the engine, presumably where it's absolutley spanked the shit out of both sides of the engine and then punctured the front.

On the plus side, I found an engine with 18k miles for 120 quid, so thats going in this week.

My mate who works for a bike shop reckons my valves must have been out, or the oil pressure fucked, or a combination, anyone got any ideas. I shall disect the engine once the new one is in to have a looksie at what's inside, for now, have a picture of metal poking through jagged metal Very Happy

Hi

Most likely low oil pressure, possibly low on oil, possibly worn out pump, possibly wrong oil, possibly block oil pickup, etc.

All the best

Keith

'Proper-job' Thumbs Up

Only just spotted this thread, good to see it is all sorted now though!! Smile

With oil everywhere, it could have been nasty if on a bend!! Shocked so in that respect consider oneself lucky if it is any consolation!! Smile

haha good effort dude.

The main thing is that you didn't lock the rear and stack it, or get burnt to a crisp, so well done.

The really burning question is did you poo your pants?

Even slightly?

Thumbs Up

Actually my first thought was 'shit shes going to go mental I'm already an hour late' Rolling Eyes

My mate helped me take it apart, he's a trainee at a yamaha dealer and I learnt a hella lot about how insides work. It was only when we took the new engine apart to do the valves and check the rings that I realised just HOW much I destroyed this one!

Took quite a bit of hammering to get the piston out of the barrel, and it's difficult to see in the photos, but opposite where the hole is there is a massive gouge in the casing and a crack on the other side too.
