Whilst washing the bike I thought I saw a "queen wasp" going in and out of a vent in my loft.
I donned my leathers, helmet and gloves and went up into the loft to see what I could find, and just above the loft hatch was the beginings of a nest about the size and shape of half a grapefruit.
Said nest was soon ripped off and dropped into a bucket of near boiling water.

Turns out it wasnt a wasp, it was this big bad muthafucker!

The coin is a 5p to give it some scale.

Yes I know I need to clean my nails...

Sorry about the poor pictures but its the best I can do with a camera phone. Im glad I got the nest when it was small and there was only big momma in there and not 10,000 angry bastards!

Hornets are safer than wasps. They're much less aggressive and only sting when threatened or when close to their nest (so 'defending' their nest).

So if you're in the loft they'll sting you? Sounds really un aggressive

Hornet stings aren't anymore poisonous than wasp stings.

That giant hornet has enough venom to kill but i dont think it can deliver it all in one go.

Hornets sound like helicopters. Awesome insects. Wouldn't want them in my loft though...

It's all about 'Tea spooning' the bastards.

A sport I invented in Greece to kill them, as most were quite upset by their presence.

Tea spoon, held at the very end between thumb and forefinger. Annnnnnnnd FLICK.

They seriously sound like a freshly shot down Meschersmitt. Putt putt putt splat. Very satisfying contact as well.

Go on, treat yourselves.

My old man was working on site once and heard something buzzing around, something large.
It was a big hornet, my dad had a saw in his hand and as it was getting far too close he twanged it. It hit the deck but recoverd and flew off. It came back for seconds so he clocked it again with the saw, this time the sa decided its fate. He brought it home in a large Swan match box and it filled it! Shocked
Ive never seen one that big again.
