Hey, been meaning to document a project for some time now and as my nc29 is basically done
I now needed another bike to feed my crack like addiction of playing in the garage.

Got myself a VFR400 nc24 Very Happy
https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2317/3655175422_633acbe7a3.jpg?v=0

I got this as a project and knew it was not in good condition!!
Did a bit of research and found out that the two main things that go wrong are the rectifiers/alternators and the exhaust collector box.

checked out the exhaust and found this:

and an invisible rectifier (must have melted away) - so looking like £60 for reg and gotta get myself a new collector box between £100 - £180

As i began to remove more of the bits around found some bodged rearsets
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3548/3655179672_22d2fd5943.jpg?v=0

And even worse a broken engine mount - will need to be drilled out when engine is removed
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3546/3655183624_2f1ab59208.jpg?v=0

Apart from that the forks are in very good condition with basically new seals

https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2449/3655212294_18e0469a5c.jpg?v=0

Both wheels have been painted and standard is good - didnt manage to stay in the lines on the rear one tho Shocked

Managed to get all the electrics out, and plan is for engine tomorrow and get it cleaned up and all broken bolts drilled out! will need to order a few from david slivers and also enquire about the collector box.

More to follow tomorrow

Lets hope this project gets finished. Seem like so many on BCF stop getting updates after a week or so.

Get rid of it now.

A running, serviced, looked after NC24 is a shit pile waiting to break expensively.

That one has already broken expensively. I hope you have lots of money to spend on it.

Just a little update, got the exhaust removed properly - think it will clean up ok but gotta wait till engine comes out so can inspect the rest of it.
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/3668217922_51342f6c03.jpg?v=0

also got the generator casing off and inspected the water pump/front cog

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3628/3668217136_a205844f50.jpg?v=0

will need a clean but more than likley new chain and sprocket kit

Gonna get my impact gun (lent to a mate) to get the flywheel off and install new generator and pickups - also need a proper jack to get engine out.

Then gotta start cleaning this and the rest of the frame

I totally agree with you, i have £500 max that i'm spending on it. Spend £320 already. Sad
With these projects people always spend more than they expected.
If i get a decent bike that i have done myself i will be happy!!

Just a quick update as i have been neglecting this thread a bit Embarassed

Engine out today:
https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2475/3743403274_49877226d3.jpg

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3444/3742613123_3982c3decb.jpg

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/3742614799_54e393cb15.jpg

tried to drill out the broken engine bolt using the torx head in hole method

https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2509/3742613863_f0c4fbda37.jpg

to no avail so extractor kit on its way from ebay!!

On a good note ordered new battery, generator, and starter solinoid all that were either dead or missing from the engine. Thumbs Up

gonna send the collector box to local garage to weld and fix up, previous owner only welded the link pipe to the collector box Evil or Very Mad so had to be ripped apart and probally either cut down or get a new one!!!

I'm 99% sure the NC24 wiring diagram is in the back of the haynes for the 30, if not I have a photocopy somewhere, because I know I have one.

Honestly though just break it for parts. They're alright but not worth the hassle. Collector box = good luck. That one looks a lot better than my did.

Rare as rocking horse shit to source a new one, but an NC21 'box fits, then you just need an link pipe fabricated, so budget for that too.

After all that, it becomes completely unviable and, at the end of it, it wont be good enough to justify it.

They sound sexy though, kind of trumpety. In a way I miss mine, but it was annoying as hell and a money pit, so no, not really.
