Is it an offence to park on the pavement?

Hi,

As above really, would it be an offence to park on the pavement, in a large open space, not in the way (next to a car parked on the pavement ) and would it also be an offence, if I got on the bike, rode it off the pavement by the most direct means, with no pedestrians in sight?

If so, can you name what the offences would also fall under?

Yeah it is I believe, my friend mounted the kerb on his bike and got a verbal warning for it from a plod.

I think the limits are up to £1000 fine and a Fixed Penalty Notice.

Parking in a space that is designed to be not a footway, its hard to explain but infront of some shops you can park. Their windows are viewing area and covered sometimes by glass. Dont take my word for it tho. would hate for you to get a ticket. But im pretty sure, aslong as you have permition.

BUT, as said previously somewhere here, on your tax disc, you clasification is a bicyle. so techically you could park in a bicycle designated area. and if you get a ticket you are kind of right as its taxed as a bicycle.

Yes, but provided you aren't causing an obstruction many will turn a blind eye to it.

In most places as long as it isnt a danger, or an obstruction they wont mind as long as it isnt on a pay and display road or timed, or whatever.

Doesnt mean to say that you wont get a ticket, all depends where you are, and how bored traffic wardens are

In many London boroughs, the traffic wardens are actually instructed to leave bikes alone. Newham and Redbridge are two of them, and I believe barking and Dagenham have the same policy.

I can put up a list of the more easygoing boroughs, if you like: I've got this guide thing that lists OK places to park the bike in London.

If you are not in london, then you are allowed to park (car too) on pavements that do not cause an obstruction...your car is very likely to be causing an obstruction though.

Theres some business about cover your number plate and they cant remove it which I am not sure if i believe (more importantly its whether the parking wardens beleive it ) but again in london, they can remove anything that blocks the number plate.

i park in lincoln on the path (well in a bicyle park which is on the path not obstructing any of the path) and ive seen numerous traffic wardens walk past and not give a ticket so i assumed it was ok if not obstructing the path.

what grounds do they have if you took your tax and numberplate with you ???

in the local city theres an area with loads of concrete balls, sculptures and a few benches around, its an area for old people to sit and rest i think...

but i couldnt find anywhere close enough to the bank to park. i had a 1 piece on so didnt fancy a long hike.

ended up just leaving it smack bang in the middle of the area. was in the bank for about an hour sorting out my accounts and stuff.

came back and there was 2 cops standing at my bike and watching me approach.

heart dropped because i dont have the money to pay a fine.

turns out that they were just bike enthusiasts, ended up having a half hour chat with them about bikes and stuff.

nice guys, i think they were called tony and steven or something like that.

Re: parking on bicycle racks.

I saw the cops vehicle removal unit lift a bike out of a bicycle stand at St Pauls once. They just pulled up and lifted it with their hiab and a couple of straps.

It might say 'bicycle' on the tax disc but that just means it has two wheels - it's a motor vehicle not a pedal cycle.
