Legal Bus Lane riders...

Hey all. This is for those that use bus lanes where allowed by local authorities, although I suppose would still count for those being cheeky and using them...

Have you noticed that when cars are waiting to pull out of junctions from side roads and you are approaching in a bus lane (on the nearside lane) that these drivers seem oblivious? I mean, even more oblivious than usual.

Each day I must ride through approximately twenty of these types of bus lanes and sure enough, at least once a day I will get some car almost pull out just as I approach, seemingly watching me but yet they still look bemused as I trundle past inches from their protruding front bumper.

I can't decide what it is that they don't get?

They don't see me, hence the suprise.
They don't believe I am allowed to use them, so they attempt to push out.
They think I'm turning left into the junction they're coming out of.

So word to the wise, bus lanes may be legal but it confuses the feck out of other road users!

Same for me but I have to add the people that then just switch lanes in front of you when the bus lane ends oblivious to the fact you are there.

You can't be complacent while in a bus lane really. In Bristol you've been able to for a while I think so whenever I'm riding round there I tend to have few problems. The biggest one I have is what minty pointed out that drivers will merge into a bus lane without looking so I tend to keep an eye out for those.

Most drivers just see us as a inconvenience to them, they don't care who has right of way or whatnot. The same drivers treat other cars on the road the very same way too.

If i am even slightly unsure of what a car waiting to pull out will do i will swerve side to side in my lane, get some lateral movement going on, i read an article whereby the eye picks up lateral movement better than just an approaching light, i often get strange looks, but damnit they saw me...

What I find with bus lanes in Bristol is that theres more ofthen than not someone taking a dislike to you getting home that little bit quicker than them. Whether it be cutting you up and going up the bus lane aswell or pulling across and driving really slowly blocking the gap to get in to it. I find thats the same with filtering aswell.

ride on the right hand side of the lane. You will be more visible for both cars on your right and chaps jumping from left.

If you are too scared just get a big white bike and a white helmet. Wear reflective clothing. Then people will think you are a copper.
