ZR400D Xanthus??

Hey folks, looking for a little help to identify the origins of this bike and help to figure out if it shares parts with other more common models.
I bought this last night and picked it up this morning.

I'd never heard of one before and although google images show plenty of pictures the general search function comes up with very little in English.
The previous owner told me that it was a ZXR400L engine, frame and swing arm but as soon as I picked the bike up I realised that this is not the case at least for the frame and swing arm. He had it advertised as a ZX400D but the frame and log book say ZR400D.

So i've just taken it for it's first run and I like it. It pulled 160kmph no problem then seemed to run out of gearing. It doesn't seem to have the same revvy rush as a ZXR but a fair bit more torque. If you bang open the throttle in 6th at 80kmph she gives you a fair kick up the arse for a 400cc. The front brakes are ok. The rear brakes are better than any bike i've ever owned. The only real let down is the suspension. I guess any cheap wee bike is gonna feel bad compared to my ohlins sprung 748 but this felt pretty awful. On smooth roads i managed to throw it about a little but over bumps it was scarey.
Ideally I'd like to replace the springs and give the forks a good overhaul but I wouldn't have a clue where to get performance springs for a bike which was never sold in the uk. It might be less painless to fit USDs and yokes from a ZXR but i've no idea if they would fit and don't know anyone local who has one to compare dimensions with.

Thanks for that Dave. It made interesting but brief reading. Now, is it saying that the frame is from ZXR or not? doesn't look anything like it to me.
Part of wants to sell this on then buy a cheap ZXR4 and street fighter it. It would be less hassle probably but the fact that these are as rare as dodo poo makes me want to keep it. I'm keen to see if ZXR yokes and forks would fit

From a quick look, as far as I know, frame and swingarm is different.
Wheels are definatly different, all zxr's had 3 spokes.

Can't really see the engine but it looks similar.
