I didn't really understand how leaving it on reserve can break the carbs?
I always thought that reserve just let fuel come out of a lower section of the tank.
Can someone please inform me Smile

Reserve is lowest part of tank, so naturally all dirt etc in tank, is going to fall to the bottom, keep running on reserve and its going to suck all that dirt and shit off the tank base through the carbs, pretty simple Razz

when fuel is left standing it can form sludge which sits at the bottom of the tank. running on reserve can pull this sludge into the carbs stopping correct function.

Most of the crap that's in the tank is rust from the tank itself and other general crud (dust, tank coating etc). They settle into the bottom and bind together and generally don't move about unless the fuel gets very low. When that happens the fuel sloshes about like waves crashing on a beach and stir up the crud so it gets suspended in the fuel and carried to the carbs.
Being on reserve makes it worse because the fuel is drawn right from the lowest point of the tank where gravity causes the crap to collect. Normally when the tap is 'ON' the fuel is drawn from an inch or two above the bottom by a small pipe.

Knowing Amal carbs it was more likely water in the float than sludge. It did seem to rain on Hammond a fair bit. It did not rain on the others so I am guessing they filmed on a different day and the Black Shadow never actualy got to Scotland at the end.

They were talking about the rain that they had left behind, but it caught up with him because he had to stop.
Also the others werent caught in it because they left earlier?


Ok that makes sense Smile thanks. Just dont get to the end of reserve looks like ^^.

Pretty sure they did all get to Scotland- there are photos of the Vincent, the Jag and the three presenters together in Edinburgh taken by a bystander on the internets... somewhere.

ive always ran my bikes with the reserve switch and never had any problems..

last bike did over 35k miles like that

If the fuel is constantly being drawn from the reserve port there won't be a chance for crap to collect there. It'll get constantly drawn through the carbs in tiny amounts. Also if you leave your fuel tap on reserve you must either be very good at judging the level by the trip counter or be very vigilant about not letting it get too low which means less sloshing about.

It did rain on the jag as it had it wipers going for quite a while.
But it was no where near as bad as when hammy was in it.
